The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed a significant hike in premium processing fees for immigration applications, effective March 1, 2026.

The fee increase, which averages 5.6%, is expected to impact thousands of businesses, students, and immigrants seeking expedited processing for work permits, residency applications, and student visas.

Why the Fee Increase?

The DHS explained that the fee adjustment is necessary to combat the rising costs of inflation and to stabilize the agency’s budget. According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the increased revenue will be directed toward enhancing immigration services, reducing processing backlogs, and improving adjudication infrastructure. The new pricing will also help support the naturalization process for eligible applicants.

A USCIS spokesperson stated, “These adjustments are vital to maintaining the integrity of our services. The funds raised will be used to improve our adjudication processes, tackle ongoing backlogs, and ultimately enhance our naturalization services.”

• Form I-765 for student employment authorization (OPT and STEM-OPT): The fee will rise to $1,780.
• H-1B, L-1, O-1, and TN visa petitions: The processing fee will increase from $2,805 to $2,965.
• Form I-140 for employment-based immigrant petitions: The fee will also increase to $2,965.
• Form I-539 for changes in student or exchange visitor status: Fees will increase from $1,965 to $2,075.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has revealed how Nigeria’s security agencies relied on precision intelligence and controlled engagement to secure the release of 38 abducted worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.

Speaking on Monday, Onanuga said operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the military used real-time tracking technologies to monitor the abductors and pressure them into freeing the captives without harm.

According to him, once the attack was reported, security agencies activated sophisticated systems that traced the movement and communication lines of the bandits, enabling operatives to maintain steady contact and negotiate from a position of tactical advantage.

“DSS and military operatives were deeply involved in the rescue of the 38 worshippers in Eruku,” he said.
“They contacted the bandits and demanded the release of the victims. Our security agencies have systems to track these criminals. They monitored developments in real time, and the bandits complied, fully aware of the consequences of defying government directives.”

Onanuga said the decision to adopt a non-kinetic approach was deliberate, noting that a direct military assault could have endangered the abductees, who are often used as human shields.

“The priority was to ensure that all abductees were reunited with their families safely. A kinetic strike would have risked collateral damage and avoidable casualties,” he added.

He also confirmed that security agencies were still pursuing the perpetrators, while the military will determine the appropriate next steps to ensure the criminals are brought to justice.

The victims were kidnapped from Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke-Isegun, in Eruku on November 18. DSS Director-General Adeola Ajayi subsequently briefed President Bola Tinubu on the incident and other unfolding security concerns across the country on November 21. By November 23, the President announced that all abductees had regained freedom.

Speaking later on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, Onanuga reiterated that coordinated intelligence was key to the operation. He added that the bandits released the captives because they knew the consequences of resisting security directives.

“They know the consequences of not acquiescing. They know they could be pummelled,” he said.

Onanuga stressed that while the victims are now safe, the operation continues, and the security agencies remain on the trail of the kidnappers.

The commendation was delivered during the weekend in Abeokuta, the state capital, at the formal inauguration of Adeolu Adejimi as the 12th Chairman of the Ogun State branch of the NIESV. The event also witnessed the swearing-in of new executives who are set to pilot the affairs of the professional body for the next two years.

Delivering his keynote remarks at the event, Abiodun Samuel, who served as the Chairman of the occasion, praised Governor Abiodun for what he described as a deliberate and people-oriented housing policy. He noted that the administration’s focused interventions in the housing sector have not only provided much-needed shelter but also significantly improved the standard of living for many residents in the state.

Institutions Are Feeling the Pain

Administrators at some public universities and hospitals confirmed that no subsidy has reached them. High electricity bills are affecting their daily operations and budgets. Many now fear disconnection.

Last year, the University of Lagos faced a power cut due to unpaid electricity bills. This situation is not unique  several institutions across Nigeria face similar risks.

A Shift to Solar Power?

The Power Ministry appears to be focusing on solar energy instead. The Rural Electrification Agency has launched projects in several universities and teaching hospitals. These include:

• University of Maiduguri and Teaching Hospital – 12MW

• University of Calabar and Teaching Hospital – 7MW

• Michael Okpara University of Agriculture – 3MW

• Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta – 3MW

• University of Abuja – 3MW

• Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna – 2.5MW

• Federal University Gashua – 1.5MW

While solar power offers long-term savings, it does not solve the current crisis for institutions struggling to pay bills.

What’s Next?

Stakeholders are urging the government to revisit the subsidy promise. They want a clear, sustainable, and transparent plan. Without this, hospitals and schools may continue to suffer.

The government must act fast  not just by planning long-term solutions, but also by delivering the relief it promised.
