Senate Pushes Stronger Response

Speaking during plenary, Oshiomhole urged the Federal Government to adopt firm measures, stressing the need for reciprocity in international relations.

“We didn’t come here to share tears… If you hit me, I’ll hit you,” he said, describing the situation as an economic and diplomatic issue.

He proposed the nationalisation of MTN and withdrawal of its operating licence, arguing that the company repatriates significant revenue while Nigerians face hostility abroad.

Call to Revoke DSTV Licence

The lawmaker also called for the revocation of DSTV’s licence, citing alleged unfair practices and economic exploitation.

He maintained that such actions would create opportunities for local firms and strengthen Nigeria’s bargaining position.

Reps Condemn Xenophobic Attacks

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has condemned the latest wave of attacks, urging immediate diplomatic and protective measures.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, noting rising fear among citizens living in the country.

AU Intervention Sought

Also speaking, Senator Victor Umeh described the situation as alarming and called on the African Union to intervene.

He urged the regional body to impose sanctions, stressing that Nigeria cannot continue to tolerate attacks on its citizens.

Rising Pressure on Federal Government

Lawmakers linked the tensions to internal political dynamics in South Africa, where anti-immigrant sentiments have gained traction.

They argued that Nigerians in South Africa are economically active and contribute positively, not a burden on the host country.

The development signals increasing pressure on the Federal Government to take a tougher stance, combining diplomatic engagement with economic countermeasures to protect Nigerians abroad.

FG Raises Concern Over Deaths

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the victims—Nnaemeka Matthew Andrew Ekpeyong and Kelvin Chidiebere Amaramiro—reportedly died after sustaining injuries while in the custody of South African security agencies.

The government described the incidents as troubling and demanded full disclosure, including autopsy reports and access to investigation details.

Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said Nigeria expects accountability and concrete action where wrongdoing is established.

Diplomatic Engagement Ongoing

The demand followed a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner, Lesoli Machele, in Abuja.

The engagement was initiated under the directive of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, as part of efforts to address the situation diplomatically.

Rising Xenophobic Tensions

Nigeria expressed concern over ongoing protests in parts of South Africa, where demonstrators have called for foreigners to leave the country.

Officials warned that such developments have heightened fear among Nigerians living in the country and could escalate into broader security risks.

Early Warning Mechanism Activated

To manage the crisis, Nigeria is fast-tracking the implementation of a bilateral Early Warning Mechanism designed to improve communication and prevent violence.

The government confirmed it has received the signed Memorandum of Understanding from South Africa and is pushing for immediate activation.

Call for Protection of Nigerians

Nigeria urged South African authorities to ensure the safety of Nigerians residing lawfully in the country, stressing the need for dignity and protection.

“We are not satisfied with just statements. We need actions,” Ebienfa said, indicating that further diplomatic steps may be taken if necessary.

Possible Next Steps

The government noted that while voluntary return for Nigerians remains self-funded, intervention could be considered if the situation deteriorates.

Officials added that Nigeria is closely monitoring developments and expects measurable outcomes from South African authorities.

The remarks, widely shared across social media, have sparked outrage and renewed concerns about the safety of migrant communities, particularly Nigerians living in the country.

In the video, the woman urged South African women married to Nigerian men to relocate with their husbands and children, suggesting that foreign families should not remain in the country.

“If a man loves you, he must take you back to where he’s coming from… let them go with their wives and their kids,” she said.

Backlash and Rising Concerns

The comments have drawn sharp criticism online, with many describing them as discriminatory and dangerous, especially for mixed-nationality families and children born in South Africa.

Observers warn that such rhetoric could inflame tensions and contribute to a hostile environment for foreign nationals.

The development comes amid ongoing activities linked to Operation Dudula, a group known for campaigning against undocumented migrants and advocating stricter controls on access to public services.

Impact on Schools and Families

Reports indicate that the situation is beginning to affect schools, where foreign pupils are increasingly feeling the impact of anti-immigrant sentiment.

Families have expressed concern that children are becoming unintended targets in a broader wave of hostility.

Education authorities have reiterated that all children have the right to education, regardless of nationality, warning that any attempt to deny access would violate established laws and protections.

A Growing Climate of Fear

The combination of inflammatory rhetoric and grassroots mobilisation has created an atmosphere of uncertainty for many African migrants, including Nigerians who make up a significant portion of the foreign population in South Africa.

The country has a long history of xenophobic violence, often linked to economic pressures, unemployment, and competition for limited resources.

However, analysts note that recent developments suggest a shift, with rhetoric increasingly targeting families and children rather than just individuals.

Calls for Stronger Action

While the government has consistently condemned xenophobic attacks and pledged to maintain law and order, critics argue that more decisive action is needed to address hate speech and protect vulnerable communities.

For many affected families, the immediate concern remains safety, as fears grow over how online rhetoric could translate into real-world consequences.

The announcement was made on Monday by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria through a statement published on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. According to the statement, the measure is being implemented under Presidential Proclamation 10998, which focuses on restricting and limiting the entry of certain foreign nationals to protect U.S. national security.

Under the proclamation, the suspension affects the issuance of B-1/B-2 visitor visas, F, M, and J student and exchange visitor visas, as well as most immigrant visas. The affected countries include Nigeria, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Venezuela, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The U.S. Mission clarified that the suspension will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 1, 2026.

However, the policy includes limited exemptions. These apply to:

Immigrant visas for ethnic and religious minorities facing persecution in Iran

The U.S. Mission further explained that the proclamation applies only to foreign nationals who are outside the United States on the effective date and do not hold valid visas at that time.

“Foreign nationals, including those outside the United States, who hold valid visas as of January 1, 2026, will not be subject to Presidential Proclamation 10998,” the statement said.

It added that no visas issued before the effective date would be revoked as a result of the policy.

Visa applicants affected by the proclamation may still submit applications and schedule interviews, but may ultimately be deemed ineligible for visa issuance or admission into the United States.

The security-focused directive, issued on December 16, 2025, is aimed at tightening entry controls on countries assessed as presenting elevated immigration or security risks, according to details published in the U.S. Federal Register.

Meanwhile, reactions from Nigerians on social media have been mixed, with many expressing concerns over possible financial losses from visa application fees, while others voiced frustration and disappointment over the development.

The U.S. government said the move was necessary to protect national security and ensure the safety of its citizens.

Alongside this, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja released a new security advisory, warning American citizens in Nigeria to avoid unnecessary travel to military and government facilities, particularly in Abuja, due to ongoing threats.

Reports earlier this week confirmed that students, professionals, and frequent travelers were among those affected by the sudden visa cancellations. Many individuals received notices without prior warning.

Former NNPC spokesperson Femi Soneye revealed that dozens of Nigerians had been directed to submit their passports to the consulate, only to have their visas revoked.

Responding to the backlash, the Embassy explained that the revocations fall under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which permits visa cancellations if there are signs of ineligibility.

Speaking to BBC News Pidgin, an Embassy spokesperson said the measure was being enforced “on a scale never seen before” as part of efforts to strengthen border security.

“We use all available information to revoke visas in order to keep American borders secure and communities safe,” the spokesperson said. Cases involving overstays, criminal activity, and terrorism-related concerns were among those flagged.

The Embassy also noted that stricter vetting procedures, including mandatory social media checks for visa applicants, now form part of its screening process.

Fresh Security Advisory in Nigeria

In its latest alert dated September 2, 2025, the U.S. Mission advised its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to Nigerian military and government facilities.

The Embassy urged Americans to steer clear of large gatherings, strengthen personal security plans, and remain alert in public places frequented by expatriates and government officials.

This latest notice adds to a string of advisories earlier this year:

In March, citizens were told to avoid the Abuja National Mosque.

In May, a warning followed an explosion near Mogadishu Barracks.

The September alert reinforces restrictions already in place for U.S. Mission staff, who may only visit military or government sites for official duties.

This is one of the key insights from the 2025 Social Cohesion Survey conducted by the Africa Polling Institute (API).

The survey included 5,465 face-to-face household interviews with Nigerians aged 15 and above. Participants were selected using a stratified random sampling method to ensure national representation.

According to the findings, 53% of respondents said they would consider moving abroad with their families if the chance arose. This reflects a rising level of dissatisfaction with life in the country.

The report also shows that 61% of Nigerians believe corruption has increased significantly over the past year. In addition, 64% rated the government’s efforts to tackle corruption as poor. These results suggest a deepening distrust in public institutions and growing frustration with governance.

AFRICA INTERNATIONAL HOUSING SHOW

When it comes to gender equality, the survey revealed strong support for inclusive policies. About 71% of Nigerians agree that women should be allowed to lead in politics, business, and religion. Similarly, 73% believe women should have equal rights to family inheritance, and the same percentage support equal rights for women who marry into a different state.

Support for female political leaders is also rising. According to the results, 63% would vote for a female president, 69% would support a woman for state governor, and 76% would vote for a woman to serve as local government chairperson. However, only 28% rated the government positively on efforts to promote gender equity, while 39% gave a poor rating.

In terms of personal wellbeing, 59% of Nigerians said they feel extremely or somewhat dissatisfied with life in the country. Despite this, 56% expressed hope that the future will be better, although 26% feared that things might get worse.

The Africa Polling Institute described these findings as a clear sign of declining national morale. The organization urged the government to introduce urgent economic and social reforms to restore hope, rebuild trust, and improve the overall quality of life for Nigerians.
