One person is feared dead while several others remain trapped after a three-storey building under construction collapsed on Wednesday along Peter Odili Road, a highbrow area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The building reportedly caved in during construction, with eyewitnesses attributing the incident to possible structural defects, although the exact cause had yet to be officially determined as of press time.

Rescue workers have recovered the lifeless body of an unidentified victim from the rubble, while efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue others believed to be trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

Emergency response teams drawn from the Rivers State Government, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other relevant agencies were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident.

A survivor identified simply as Taiwo disclosed that at least seven workers were trapped when the building suddenly gave way.

“This morning, I went out to buy something. About eight people were working inside, and they said some of them are Hausa people. One of my brothers was inside. Four of them were brought out, but other people are still trapped,” he said.

Officials of the Rivers State Ministry of Urban Development and Physical Planning, the Ministry of Health, security agencies, and emergency responders were seen coordinating rescue efforts at the site.

Speaking at the scene, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Health and Director of Medical Services, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, said emergency teams were mobilised immediately after receiving reports of the collapse.

“We are here on Peter Odili Road following disturbing news this morning that a three-storey building collapsed around here. We quickly mobilised ambulance teams and medical personnel to support rescue operations,” he said.

According to him, two severely injured victims had already been rescued and transferred to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) for urgent medical attention.

“We have activated the Hospital Emergency Medical Services, and the Emergency Unit of RSUTH is fully prepared. NEMA, FRSC, NSCDC and other security agencies are all on ground. All hands are on deck to ensure those still trapped are rescued,” Wachukwu added.

Rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of filing this report as authorities worked to determine the number of victims and the cause of the collapse.

Two children have been rescued following the collapse of a two-storey residential building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at about 9:10 a.m. on Ajegunle Street, off Sabo-Line in the Isale area, where a six-flat building reportedly gave way, raising renewed concerns about structural safety in residential properties.

According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the children were trapped in the rubble shortly after the collapse but were rescued before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The Fire Service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the rescue and identified the children as Ahmad (8) and Hussainat (10).

He explained that both children were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention after being pulled from the debris.

Firefighters Begin Salvage Operations

Following the arrival of emergency responders, firefighters commenced salvage operations at the site.

Officials recovered items from accessible sections of the building, including clothing, electronics, food supplies, and important personal documents belonging to residents.

The operation also involved assessing the extent of damage and ensuring no additional victims were trapped within the structure.

Authorities Flag Safety Risks in Adjacent Buildings

After an on-site inspection, the Fire Service raised concerns about the structural integrity of nearby buildings.

It recommended that the Disaster Management Department of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) take immediate action to prevent further risk in the area.

The recommendation included sealing off the collapsed structure and issuing a seven-day ultimatum for evacuation of a neighbouring building deemed unsafe for habitation.

The NSCDC Disaster Management unit subsequently sealed off the affected site and enforced evacuation directives on the adjacent structure.

Prior Warning Signs Reported

Officials also disclosed that the caretaker of the collapsed building had previously been alerted to the deteriorating condition of the property before the incident occurred.

This development has intensified concerns over enforcement of building safety regulations and early intervention by property stakeholders.

Fire Service Urges Preventive Maintenance

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, who supervised operations at the scene, urged property owners to prioritize regular structural integrity checks.

He emphasized the importance of responding promptly to early warning signs such as wall cracks, weak foundations, and visible structural defects.

According to him, proactive maintenance and compliance with safety standards remain critical to preventing avoidable building collapses.

The Environmental Taskforce in Edo State on Saturday arrested 50 persons in Benin for violating sanitation laws.

Armed men suspected to be kidnappers on Friday night launched a deadly ambush on operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, killing eight officers and abducting a Chinese expatriate.

The attack, which occurred at about 10 p.m. near the BUA Cement Factory, also left four officers seriously injured. Security sources confirmed that four other expatriates were rescued during the assault.

According to CSC Afolabi Babawale, the NSCDC’s National Public Relations Officer, the gunmen targeted a convoy of operatives assigned to protect expatriates at the cement plant.

“The convoy of NSCDC personnel and expatriates was ambushed in a three-hour gun battle, leaving eight personnel dead, four injured, one expatriate missing, and four others rescued,” Babawale said in a statement on Saturday.

The Commandant-General of NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, described the fallen officers as patriots who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation. He ordered that they be buried with full honours.

“Their labour, commitment, and patriotism will forever be remembered. This tragic incident will not deter the Corps from fulfilling its mandate of safeguarding critical national assets,” Audi said.

He also disclosed that joint operations involving security agencies have begun in surrounding forests to rescue the abducted expatriate and apprehend the attackers.

The Edo State NSCDC Commandant, Agun Gbenga, has visited the scene of the attack and the hospital where the wounded operatives are receiving treatment. Security reinforcements have since been deployed to the area.

The killings came just hours after a separate abduction incident on the Benin-Auchi Road, where 16 passengers were kidnapped and taken into the forest. Edo Police spokesperson Moses Yamu confirmed that all victims have since been rescued through a joint operation involving police, vigilantes, and local hunters.
