Chief Martin Onovo, a former presidential candidate and policy expert at the Movement for Fundamental Change, didn’t hold back in his criticism. Onovo argued that the EFCC, like all government agencies, follows the direction of the political leadership. Under Tinubu’s administration, he believes this leadership is deeply entrenched in corruption. He referenced a ranking by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, which placed Tinubu among the world’s most corrupt leaders. Onovo believes this environment makes it impossible for the EFCC to effectively combat corruption. “The corrupt cannot fight their own corruption,” he stated. He added that the commission has become a tool to target political opponents rather than uphold justice.

Barrister Olalekan Ojo’s Concerns

Barrister Olalekan Ojo, a prominent Lagos lawyer, acknowledged the EFCC’s visible efforts, such as high-profile arrests and asset recoveries. However, he voiced concerns about selective prosecution. He criticized the commission for focusing on opposition figures while ignoring government allies. Ojo stressed that for the EFCC to regain its legitimacy, reforms are necessary. He called for impartiality, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. Without these reforms, he warned, the agency could be seen as a political weapon rather than a genuine anti-corruption force.

Hon. Charles C. Anike, leader of the Eastern Union, offered an even harsher critique. He described the EFCC as a “ghost name” under Tinubu’s government. Anike accused the agency of becoming an instrument of oppression used to silence dissent and protect the interests of those in power. His harsh assessment suggests the EFCC has strayed from its original purpose of upholding the law.

What Lies Ahead for the EFCC?

As criticism against the EFCC continues to grow, its credibility is at stake. The commission must decide whether to reform and regain public trust or remain seen as a tool of political control. The agency’s next steps will determine if it can prove its commitment to fighting corruption fairly and impartially.

Progress is moving steadily along Nigeria’s ambitious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. The federal government has already started compensating those whose properties are affected.

According to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, at least 700 individuals have received payments for structures impacted by the first phase of construction.

He shared this update during a stakeholder meeting at Eko Hotel in Lagos. Umahi also used the opportunity to address recent controversies surrounding the project.

The minister made it clear that the government has acted transparently and fairly. He responded to claims from an international investor who alleged her $250 million investment was threatened by the road project. Umahi explained that all affected owners were identified and paid compensation legally. He said the claims being circulated are simply not true.

19th Edition Africa International Housing Show

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is over 700 kilometers long. It is designed to reduce traffic on existing routes and improve movement across Nigeria. The project is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is expected to bring long-term development along the coastal region.

Umahi said the project is not just about roads. It is about safety, growth, and building smarter infrastructure for the future. He confirmed that the second phase of the project has already begun. Site clearing and dredging are underway. All construction follows the best environmental and engineering standards.

The highway will include key features like a central rail line and shoreline protection. These additions aim to make the road both modern and climate-resilient.

Umahi also acknowledged the sacrifices made by property owners along the route. He promised that the government will continue to engage with communities and developers. The goal is to protect as many properties as possible while still building an efficient and cost-effective road.

Community leaders at the meeting praised the government for its efforts. They urged officials to keep addressing issues such as drainage, dredging, and long-term road durability. Umahi assured them that the ministry is listening and working to meet those needs.

With bulldozers on site and new plans in motion, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is already making an impact. Hundreds of people have been compensated, and more will benefit from improved roads and new opportunities. This project is more than just construction. It represents what’s possible when progress is built on responsibility.

Market women across Nigeria may soon find relief from housing struggles if a bold proposal championed by Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the Iyaloja General of Nigeria, gains traction.

Folashade has called on the Federal Government to construct 3,600 housing units specifically for market traders nationwide, addressing a long-standing challenge that has left many struggling with accommodation insecurity.

During an advocacy visit to the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Ata, in Abuja, Tinubu-Ojo made a passionate appeal for the government to take immediate steps toward affordable housing solutions for women in trade. The Iyaloja General, who is also the daughter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighted how crucial it is to recognize the economic contributions of market women and reward their efforts with policies that uplift their living standards.

Her proposal outlines the construction of 100 housing units in each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, ensuring that thousands of hardworking market traders finally have a place to call their own. Stressing the urgent need for structured mortgage schemes, Tinubu-Ojo emphasized that housing security plays a fundamental role in economic stability. Many women in trade, she noted, find it nearly impossible to own homes due to financial barriers, making them vulnerable to unstable living conditions.

19th Africa International Housing Show 2025

As key contributors to Nigeria’s trade and commerce, market women play a significant role in national development. However, the lack of stable housing affects their financial well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life. This initiative is designed to close the gender gap in homeownership, empowering these women with affordable and accessible housing,” she stated.

Beyond offering shelter, the proposed housing initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes improving citizens’ lives through strategic interventions. Tinubu-Ojo reminded government officials that market women played a critical role in grassroots mobilization for the current administration and that their unwavering support should be reciprocated with policies that improve their standard of living.

In response, Minister Abdullahi Ata praised the Iyaloja General for her advocacy and commitment to the welfare of Nigerian market traders. He assured her that the proposal would be given serious consideration, promising to push for its inclusion in the government’s supplementary budget discussions.

“I appreciate your dedication to the cause of market women. The government remains committed to promoting equitable access to housing, and I will do my best to ensure this proposal is thoroughly reviewed. I will advocate for its consideration by the Federal Executive Council, exploring its feasibility within our housing initiatives,” Ata stated.

The proposed housing units, if approved, will be developed in phases across all states and the Federal Capital Territory. A transparent mortgage system will be introduced to ensure affordability, allowing market women to acquire homes through reasonable installment payments. Additionally, the initiative is expected to boost economic activity by creating jobs in the construction sector while also addressing the country’s ongoing housing deficit.

Stakeholders and market associations have welcomed the Iyaloja General’s initiative with optimism, commending her relentless efforts to secure better living conditions for Nigeria’s trading community. Many believe that if implemented, the project will be a game-changer, providing economic empowerment and social security for thousands of women who have long been overlooked in national housing policies.

As the conversation around affordable housing for market women gains momentum, all eyes are now on the Federal Government to take decisive action in making this vision a reality. With strong advocacy and governmental support, the dream of homeownership for Nigeria’s hardworking market women may soon become a reality.

Under President Bola Tinubu’s vision, with Finance Minister Wale Edun leading the charge, this initiative is set to open up new opportunities for Nigerians seeking affordable homes.

With this significant investment, the foundation has been laid for long-term sustainability under expert private sector stewardship. The appointed fund manager, ARM Investment Managers, will channel the funds to facilitate long-term, low-cost mortgage financing while also guaranteeing developers the security they need to deliver quality housing on time.

This approach is expected to not only boost homeownership but also accelerate economic development through the real estate and construction industries.

MREIF is positioned to revolutionize housing access by making long-term mortgages more attainable for aspiring homeowners. At the same time, real estate developers will benefit from guaranteed funding, allowing them to scale up affordable housing projects, create jobs, and stimulate broader economic activity. Following the successful full subscription of the N150bn Series 1 issuance, MOFI has announced that Series 2, worth N100bn, will soon be available to private and commercial investors, pending approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

This initiative presents an exciting opportunity for institutional investors, high-net-worth individuals, and private stakeholders to take part in a transformative project that merges economic impact with financial returns. Investors will not only benefit from attractive profits but will also contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth, housing development, and alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The House of Representatives Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning has issued strong accusations against contractors involved in the Renewed Hope housing project in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, alleging deliberate sabotage against the Federal Government’s efforts to provide affordable housing for citizens.

The charges were made by Committee Chairman Awaji-Inombek Dagomie Abiante (PDP, Rivers) during an oversight visit to the project site ahead of the presentation of the 2025 budget.

Abiante, expressing his dismay at the state of progress, summoned Housing and Urban Development Minister Ahmed Musa Dangiwa and the four contractors responsible for the project to provide explanations for the delays and substandard execution. The chairman described the implementation of the project as highly unsatisfactory, noting that despite significant funding—30 percent allocated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development—less than six percent of the work had been completed.

Click Here To Become A Member Of Housing Development Advocacy Network( HDAN)

He underscored that the housing project, awarded in June with a projected completion date in September, should have shown far more progress by now. His dissatisfaction was compounded by the poor quality of work on the Umu Etuk-Spencer Esin Road slum upgrade in Oron. The chairman stressed that competent, reliable contractors were essential for the proper execution of government initiatives, emphasizing the need for accountability and high standards in federal projects.

Abiante voiced particular frustration over the contractor responsible for the Oron road project, who he claimed had squandered allocated funds on subpar materials, leading to a road that, despite being built as recently as July, had already deteriorated visibly. “You can see the deplorable state of this road, which was intended to ease the hardships faced by the local residents. The committee finds this situation unacceptable,” he stated, highlighting the gravity of wasted public resources.

Naming the firms involved, Abiante pointed out that Springwell Intercontinental Resources, Tunsoye Trust Global Link, and Hyosungs Nigeria Limited were overseeing the construction of 250 housing units in Uruan and Uyo Capital City. Logine Limited was tasked with the slum upgrade in Oron Local Government Area. He accused these contractors of undermining the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme initiated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a move to enforce accountability, Abiante instructed the legislative panel’s Clerk to send formal invitations to Minister Dangiwa and the contractors, compelling them to appear before the committee on Thursday without fail. The chairman explained that the meeting would serve as an opportunity to clarify the obstacles that had led to such a disappointing level of progress and to outline necessary measures to prevent future lapses in project execution.
