The incident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, prompting an immediate response from emergency personnel.

The Head of the Sokoto Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Tukur Abubakar, who oversees emergency operations in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states, confirmed the incident at the scene. He said emergency responders conducted a thorough assessment and established that there were no casualties or persons trapped following the collapse.

Officials have commenced investigations to determine the cause of the structural failure. Although the building was still under construction, authorities said the outcome of the investigation would establish whether construction defects, structural weaknesses, or other factors contributed to the collapse.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over recurring cases of building collapse across Nigeria, with experts repeatedly calling for stricter enforcement of building regulations, improved quality control, and greater compliance with approved construction standards. Industry stakeholders maintain that engaging qualified professionals and ensuring regular site inspections are critical to preventing structural failures.

Construction professionals have also urged developers to comply with approved building plans, use certified building materials, and adhere to engineering specifications throughout the construction process. They argue that strengthening regulatory oversight will improve public safety and restore confidence in Nigeria’s construction industry.

The disclosure was made by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, during a stakeholders’ engagement on building safety. He described the recurring incidents as a national concern that continues to claim lives, destroy property, and erode public confidence in the construction industry.

According to the minister, investigations into many of the collapse incidents revealed recurring issues such as the use of substandard building materials, poor workmanship, structural design defects, inadequate supervision, disregard for approved building plans, and weak enforcement of development control regulations. He stressed that many of these tragedies were preventable through strict compliance with existing laws and professional standards.

Dangiwa said the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to improve building safety through stronger regulatory oversight, collaboration with professional bodies, and the implementation of the National Building Code. He also called on state governments to strengthen development control agencies, conduct regular inspections, and ensure that only qualified professionals are involved in building projects.

The minister urged developers, property owners, engineers, architects, builders, and other stakeholders to prioritise quality, safety, and compliance throughout the construction process. He noted that protecting lives and investments requires collective responsibility and greater accountability across the built environment.

Industry professionals also advocated stricter sanctions against individuals and firms found guilty of violating construction standards. They maintained that improving professional ethics, adopting modern construction technologies, and strengthening institutional capacity would significantly reduce the frequency of building collapses in Nigeria.

Stakeholders believe sustained enforcement of building regulations, increased public awareness, and continuous professional training are essential to creating safer buildings, protecting lives, and restoring confidence in Nigeria’s real estate and construction sectors.

A tragic structural failure along Dr Peter Odili Road in the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State has resulted in one confirmed fatality and multiple injuries. Emergency response teams successfully extracted three individuals alive from the rubble after a five-storey building under construction suddenly gave way. The incident, which unfolded near the Eterna Filling Station, initially trapped an estimated seven construction workers under heavy debris, throwing the local community into panic.

Preliminary findings indicate that the project developer intentionally violated regulatory approvals and safety standards. While the Federal Housing Authority originally approved plans for a three-storey building at the site, the developer proceeded to erect a five-storey structure instead. Furthermore, state government officials revealed that the site engineer had previously ignored formal directives to halt construction operations after visible structural irregularities were discovered during a routine inspection. Technical experts visiting the scene noted that a visual assessment pointed toward the extensive use of substandard concrete, cement, and reinforcing steel bars.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially sealed the site and ordered a full-scale investigation into the disaster. Accompanied by urban development and physical planning officials, the governor stated that the developer had repeatedly rebuffed inspections by claiming state authorities lacked jurisdiction over the federally allocated land. Governor Fubara emphasized that compliance with engineering standards takes precedence over jurisdictional disputes, especially when human lives are lost. Multinational construction firm Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has deployed heavy excavators, mobile cranes, and specialized concrete cutters to coordinate with state emergency agencies as recovery operations continue at the site.

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has launched an investigation into the recent building collapse in the Gaduwa District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, promising sanctions against any individuals or organisations found responsible.

The Registrar of COREN, Prof. Okorie Uche, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists and stakeholders in Durumi 3, near Gudu Market, Abuja.

According to him, an investigative panel has already been constituted to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the collapse, with work expected to begin within the next two weeks.

He said the probe will also identify all engineers, contractors, and developers linked to the project for appropriate regulatory action.

Preliminary findings, he noted, have already revealed discrepancies regarding the identity of the engineer initially linked to the project.

“We have been able to establish that the person being paraded as the engineer on the site is not the actual person responsible,” he said.

Prof. Uche explained that although the individual named on the project signage is an engineering personnel, he is not a registered engineer qualified to act as a consultant on such a project.

He further clarified that the engineering profession operates within defined cadres, including engineers, technologists, technicians, and craftsmen, stressing that only registered engineers are legally permitted to serve as consultants on construction projects.

“The engineering profession consists of four cadres — engineers, technologists, technicians and craftsmen — but only a registered engineer can legally function as a consultant on this type of project,” he stated.

The COREN registrar also revealed that the registration number displayed on the project belongs to a different individual identified as an engineering technologist, prompting the council to summon both parties for clarification.

He added that the consultant whose name appeared on the site claimed to have withdrawn from the project earlier in May.

According to him, COREN will carefully review all submissions before reaching a conclusion, adding that all involved parties will be subjected to professional scrutiny.

Prof. Uche blamed some developers for bypassing regulatory processes and engaging unqualified personnel, warning that such practices compromise public safety.

He also raised concerns about the widespread use of substandard building materials in Nigeria, noting that many imported products fail to meet required engineering standards.

According to him, laboratory tests on materials from the collapsed structure revealed that the concrete strength was below specification.

“The concrete was expected to attain a strength of 25 newtons per millimetre square, but when tested it was only 18,” he said.

He also alleged that reinforcement rods in the market are often mislabelled, creating serious structural risks for buildings nationwide.

“You may see a reinforcement rod labelled Y-16, but when measured it is actually Y-14,” he explained.

Prof. Uche called for stronger collaboration between COREN, the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to curb recurring building failures.

He also acknowledged funding constraints facing the council following its defunding in 2023, noting that this has affected operations into 2026.

Despite the challenges, he reaffirmed COREN’s commitment to strengthening engineering regulation and reducing building collapses across the country.

The incident occurred on Monday evening as workers reportedly escaped moments before the structure began caving in.

When reporters visited the site on Wednesday, the building, which was said to be intended for hotel use, had tilted dangerously in different directions after suffering a partial structural collapse.

A resident identified simply as Uzor said more than 20 construction workers were on the second floor of the building when loud cracking sounds suddenly emerged from the structure.

According to him, panic broke out immediately as workers rushed to save themselves.

“Prior to the collapse, more than 20 workers were working at different sections of the building. Around 5pm, loud cracking sounds came from the second floor and the structure began caving in. Thankfully, nobody was trapped because the workers jumped down one after another,” he said.

He explained that the structure, designed as a three-storey hotel building, now leans dangerously on multiple sides and poses a serious threat to nearby residents and road users.

Uzor suggested that the speed of construction and heavy rainfall in recent days may have contributed to the incident.

Another resident, Amaka, blamed the collapse on possible use of substandard materials and what she described as rushed construction practices.

“How can blocks be stacked on top of fresh ones that have not dried properly, especially during the rainy season? Many of the iron rods sold today are inferior and not suitable for multi-storey buildings,” she said.

She also disclosed that government officials visited the location on Tuesday and immediately sealed the premises to prevent further danger.

Observations at the scene showed the property had been cordoned off with warning tape and barriers following the visit of officials from the state urban and town planning authorities.

An official at the site, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed that investigations had commenced.

According to the official, authorities are examining whether proper approvals were obtained and if construction standards were violated.

“The premises have been sealed pending investigation. The building is now slanting in different directions and poses a serious risk. Authorities will determine how the structure failed and whether necessary procedures were ignored,” the official said.

He added that although construction workers were present during the collapse, no casualty was recorded.

Meanwhile, spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident but said detailed information was still being compiled.

“Yes, it is true, but details are still sketchy. I will provide more information when details become available,” he said.

Building collapses continue to raise concerns across Nigeria, with experts frequently attributing such incidents to poor supervision, structural defects, substandard materials and weak enforcement of construction regulations.

Professionals within the built environment sector have repeatedly called for stricter monitoring and stronger compliance measures to reduce avoidable structural failures.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the incident occurred around 12:20 a.m., prompting an immediate response from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team. The agency’s Director, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that the building had earlier been marked as distressed before it gave way while residents were still inside.

“So far, 15 people seven men, four women, and four children have been rescued with varying injuries and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan,” Adeseye said, adding that rescue operations were ongoing.

Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often linked to poor regulation, substandard materials, and weak structural supervision. Similar incidents in Ikoyi (2021) and Yaba (2025) claimed multiple lives.
