President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. John Nwabueze as the new Tax Ombudsman.

The appointment was made under the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025, and is part of the government’s ongoing tax and revenue reforms.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Nwabueze brings extensive experience from both public and private sectors.

He has previously served as Managing Partner of a tax advisory firm, Technical Adviser to the Joint Senate Committees on Finance and the FCT, and adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Dr. Nwabueze holds a Doctor of Business Administration in Finance from Walden University, a Master’s in Accounting from Strayer University, and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting and Mathematics from the University of Jos.

The Office of the Tax Ombudsman was created to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in tax administration.

It will handle complaints about taxes, levies, regulatory fees, customs duties, and related issues, aiming to protect taxpayers’ rights and resolve disputes efficiently.

President Tinubu congratulated Nwabueze, expressing confidence in his ability to perform the role with integrity and professionalism.

The creation of this office continues Tinubu’s fiscal reform agenda, which includes harmonising the tax system, reducing multiple taxation, improving revenue collection, and increasing public confidence in tax administration.
