In a bold move to address Nigeria’s longstanding housing deficit, the Federal Government has unveiled plans to develop 77,400 social housing units across all 774 local government areas, alongside the launch of three new “Renewed Hope Cities” in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano.
This landmark initiative, anchored under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, was disclosed by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Yusuf Ata, in a recent statement.
According to the minister, the nationwide housing programme will include the construction of 250 housing units in each state and 3,000 units in each of the new urban hubs planned for Lagos, Abuja, and Kano. The broader rollout will see 100 social housing units built in every local government area of the federation.
“This administration is committed to tackling the housing challenge head-on by making significant investments and fostering strong public-private partnerships,” Ata stated. “We are open to collaboration with reputable investors such as Ms Allen Le and Partners International Investment Consulting, who have shown interest in supporting our mission.”
Ata emphasised that the initiative is not only a numbers-driven exercise but a social intervention that prioritises vulnerable groups. “Thirty per cent of the 77,400 units are reserved for Nigerians without any form of income,” he revealed, adding that President Tinubu had insisted on maintaining this quota despite proposals to reduce it to 20 per cent.
The minister called for clarity from interested partners on the nature and scope of their proposed collaborations. “We expect formal proposals indicating specific areas of interest for partnership. Transparency is essential as we move forward,” he said.
During the meeting, Mr. Allen Ke Nam of SV-NED Incorporated, who led the visiting delegation, expressed strong interest in investing in affordable housing projects. He requested government support in securing land and highlighted the potential socioeconomic impact of the initiative, including job creation and skills development through the adoption of innovative construction techniques.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Shuaib Belgore, welcomed the investment interest and assured the delegation of the ministry’s readiness to provide all necessary support to facilitate meaningful collaboration.
The initiative is expected to significantly contribute to reducing the nation’s housing shortfall while driving economic empowerment through construction-related employment and infrastructure expansion.
