The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday released the official timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, in accordance with the 2022 Electoral Act.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan confirmed that the Presidential election is scheduled for February 20, 2027.
“The Commission has finalized the electoral calendar to guide all stakeholders and political actors as we approach the 2027 polls,” Prof. Amupitan said.
The announcement aligns with the Commission’s commitment to providing clear timelines for political parties, candidates, and the general electorate, ensuring adequate preparation for the voting process.
Further details on the National Assembly, gubernatorial, and state assembly elections, as well as the sequence of primaries and voter education initiatives, are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
This timetable comes amid INEC’s planning for a robust electoral process, including collaboration with security agencies and anti-corruption bodies such as the EFCC and ICPC to curb vote-buying and other electoral malpractices.
“Our objective is to conduct transparent, credible, and timely elections in line with the law and the expectations of Nigerians,” Prof. Amupitan added.
The Commission’s disclosure follows its 2025 budget proposals for the 2027 elections, including N873 billion earmarked for election activities, and recent reports that overall spending on the electoral process may reach N1.04 trillion.
INEC has urged political parties, civil society, and citizens to closely follow the timetable and engage responsibly in the electoral process.
