BREAKING: Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed Among Victims in Fatal Helicopter Crash

A tragic Ghana helicopter crash has claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, government officials confirmed today.

The fatal crash occurred in Adansi Akrofuom, located in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The two ministers were on their way to Obuasi for an official event. The incident happened on the morning of Tuesday, August 6, 2025.

According to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, four people died in the crash. Both ministers were among the confirmed victims.

Dr. Omane Boamah and Murtala Mohammed were scheduled to attend the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP). The programme is part of government efforts to combat illegal mining in Ghana.

The Ghana Armed Forces released a statement shortly after the crash. It confirmed that a Z9 military helicopter went missing after departing Accra at 09:12 GMT. The aircraft was heading to Obuasi with five passengers and three crew members on board.

“A GAF helicopter, Z9, that took off this morning at 0912hrs from Accra and heading for Obuasi is currently off the radar. All efforts are being made to establish contact,” the GAF statement read.

Eyewitnesses say the helicopter caught fire upon impact. Emergency services responded quickly, but all efforts to save lives at the scene were unsuccessful.

Security personnel have sealed off the crash site. Investigations into the cause of the Ghana helicopter crash are now underway.

Ghana is in mourning as the news sends shockwaves through the nation. The deaths of Dr. Omane Boamah and Murtala Mohammed mark a significant loss in the country’s leadership.
