Namibia has officially received the China-Aided Satellite Ground Data Receiving Station (SGDRS), marking a major step in the country’s space technology development.

The handover was formalized through the signing of documents by officials from Namibia’s Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Science and Technology (MEIYSAC) and the Chinese Embassy.

The SGDRS project, which began in 2023, includes satellite data receiving infrastructure, processing systems, and technician training.

The facility will help Namibia use satellite data for natural resource management, agriculture, disaster response, climate adaptation, and anti-poaching initiatives.

Officials said the facility strengthens Namibia’s ability to monitor its environment, respond to emergencies, and manage resources sustainably. Chinese experts also trained Namibian technicians to operate and maintain the systems independently, ensuring long-term local capability.

The handover highlights growing cooperation between Namibia and China in space technology and positions Namibia to take advantage of satellite data for national development.
