In a bold move to reduce insecurity and promote rehabilitation, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has introduced a statewide amnesty programme for cultists and those in possession of illegal arms.

This initiative, unveiled during a peace meeting with leaders from Obagie, Oke-Oroma, and Amagba communities in Benin City, aims to reduce violent crime and create safer communities in the state.

What the Amnesty Programme Offers
The Edo amnesty programme provides a pathway for cult members and armed youths to renounce violence and receive vocational training and empowerment support. The government plans to set up a technical committee to oversee the process and ensure fairness and transparency.

“We want to give our young people a second chance to be useful to themselves and to society,” Governor Okpebholo said.

New City Project Kicks Off in Edo State
Alongside the amnesty initiative, the Governor also announced the kickoff of Edo State’s new city development, beginning with LOT ‘A’, which includes the communities of Obagie, Oke-Oroma, and Amagba.

The project promises modern infrastructure, job creation, and respect for traditional sites. It marks a turning point for urban development in Edo State.

Land Regularization and Title Registration: What Property Owners Need to Know
To correct past injustices, Governor Okpebholo is encouraging residents affected by previous demolitions under the last administration to present their documents to the newly formed Land Resolution Committee.

He also urged property owners to register their lands with Edo GIS to obtain secure land titles and prevent future disputes.

“Survey your land, register it with Edo GIS, and secure your legal documents,” the Governor advised.

Community Leaders React
Community elders from the three host areas expressed their support for the Governor’s initiatives. They praised the administration’s willingness to engage in dialogue and right historical wrongs dating back to 2017.

“This is the first time the government is truly listening to us,” said Pa Michael Omoruyi of Obagie.

Who’s On the Committee?
The Edo State Land Resolution Committee is chaired by Dr. Tony Ikpasaja, with Dr. Abdulwasiu Oyakhire serving as Secretary. Other members include:

  • The State Surveyor-General
  • Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning
  • A representative from the Ministry of Justice
  • Dr. Felix Iyalomhen from the Edo State House of Assembly

A New Era for Edo State
With this dual approach of peacebuilding through amnesty and economic transformation via urban planning, Edo State is entering a new chapter under Governor Okpebholo’s leadership.

Don’t forget: If you own property in Edo State, now is the time to register your land and secure your title through the Edo GIS system.
