The Federal Ministry of Environment has joined Nigeria’s digital transformation push with the launch of the Galaxy Backbone 1Government Cloud Digitalisation Programme in Abuja.
Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal described the initiative as a milestone toward modernising environmental governance and advancing sustainability through technology. He said the platform would enable data-driven management, cut costs, reduce paperwork, and lower carbon emissions.
The project, led by Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB), aims to digitise 70% of federal services by 2025 under a unified cloud framework that promotes data sovereignty and paperless governance.
Programme Director Wumi Oghoetuoma said the 1Gov Cloud was built “in Africa, for Africa, by Africa,” with homegrown tools like GovECM, GovDrive, GovMail, and GovESign already in use. The ministry has onboarded 15 departments, created 316 workflows, and activated 890 user accounts.
Dr. Sam Nwosu, CEO of Secured Records Management Solutions Ltd, praised the project as proof of Nigeria’s capacity for world-class digital innovation.
