The Federal Government has restated its plan to empower Nigerian contractors and promote local participation in national road projects.

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, made this known during his inspection of the Oyo–Ogbomoso dual carriageway project handled by JRB Construction Company Limited.

Umahi said President Bola Tinubu had given a clear directive to the Ministry of Works to support and encourage indigenous contractors delivering quality projects.

“President Tinubu wants us to empower local contractors, and I make no apology for doing so,” Umahi said. “JRB has shown that Nigerian companies can deliver high-quality work. I am proud of what they have achieved here.”

The minister praised JRB for its performance on the 52-kilometre project, which was initially awarded to another company before JRB took over. The indigenous firm has made significant progress within just eight months of the 18-month contract period.

Umahi described JRB as one of the best indigenous contractors in the ministry, noting that the quality of its drainage systems could only be compared with that of Hi-Tech Construction, which is currently handling the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project.

“I want JRB and other local firms to keep improving. Every contractor should aim for the same standard as Hi-Tech. With your equipment and skilled workers, you can reach that level,” Umahi added.

He also stressed that contractors must show commitment by investing in their projects instead of relying only on government payments.

“If indigenous firms can deliver this well, there is no reason to keep giving jobs to foreign companies that bring nothing to our economy,” the minister said. “JRB has done more work than the payments received. That shows real partnership and dedication.”

The Technical Project Manager of JRB Construction, Mr. Joseph Onche, assured that the company would complete the project ahead of the September 2026 deadline.

“We mobilised to site immediately after the contract award and have worked for eight months so far. We are confident of finishing before schedule,” Onche said.

The Oyo–Ogbomoso dual carriageway is a key national route that links northern and southern Nigeria. When completed, it is expected to improve transportation, boost trade, and promote economic growth in the region.
