The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has commenced construction of a 195-unit housing estate in Ogun State, intensifying efforts to expand affordable housing delivery and revive large-scale public housing development across Nigeria.

The project, named FHA Gateway Estate, is situated in Ofada, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State. The initiative was officially launched by FHA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oyetunde Ojo.

The development comes at a time when pressure continues to mount on the Federal Government to address Nigeria’s housing deficit, estimated at over 20 million units. According to the FHA, the Ogun project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to accelerate housing delivery nationwide.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Ojo said the estate will consist of 95 two-bedroom apartments and 100 three-bedroom terrace duplexes. The development is being delivered through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement involving Greenpasture Homes and Akkenog International Company Limited.

He explained that the project reflects a strategic shift toward stronger collaboration with the private sector, noting that government alone cannot close Nigeria’s housing gap.

“Today’s groundbreaking marks another critical step in expanding Nigeria’s housing stock and fulfilling the mandate handed to us by President Tinubu to make housing more accessible to Nigerians,” Ojo said.

He added that the Authority plans to replicate similar partnership-based housing projects in different parts of the country. According to him, the PPP model remains one of the most sustainable approaches for attracting investment and accelerating housing delivery.

Ojo also highlighted the impact of ongoing infrastructure development, especially the reconstruction of the Sagamu-Owode road corridor, which he said has increased the value and accessibility of the project area.

FHA Executive Director of Estate Services, Ezekiel Nya Etok, expressed confidence in the administration’s housing strategy. He said the scale of current interventions could redefine public housing development in Nigeria.

Etok suggested that the housing initiatives under the current administration may eventually gain recognition comparable to the low-cost housing projects associated with former Lagos governor Lateef Jakande.

Providing additional details, FHA General Manager for Partnerships, Peter Okpanachi, explained that the estate was designed with modern infrastructure, security features and a peaceful environment to attract both homeowners and investors.

Private sector partners also assured stakeholders of their commitment to timely delivery and quality standards.

Managing Director of Greenpasture Homes Limited, Oloyede Oluwale, assured prospective buyers that the project would not face abandonment due to FHA’s oversight and institutional backing.

Similarly, Managing Director of Akkenog International Company Limited, Kehinde Akinwunmi Ogunusi, described the partnership structure as transparent and robust.

The FHA Gateway Estate project reinforces the government’s increasing reliance on infrastructure-backed housing projects and private-sector collaboration to stimulate investment and improve access to housing.
