The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has officially sworn in Haruna Yahaya as its 61st president, marking a new chapter in the leadership of the nation’s foremost accounting body.
The investiture ceremony, held Tuesday at ICAN’s headquarters in Lagos, drew dignitaries from across the financial and public sectors. Yahaya takes over from Davidson Alaribe, whose one-year tenure saw notable expansion efforts across the country.
In his farewell address, Alaribe highlighted some of his administration’s achievements, including the establishment of 26 new District Societies, with 24 formally inaugurated, aimed at deepening ICAN’s grassroots reach and strengthening professional networks nationwide.
Notable guests at the ceremony included representatives of several state governments and financial institutions. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Accountant-General, Dr. Abiodun Muritala, commended ICAN’s commitment to professional excellence.
Also in attendance were Jigawa State Deputy Governor Aminu Usman, Jigawa State Attorney General Abdulqadir Fanini, and Dr. Rabiu Olowo, Executive Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria.
The event also welcomed leaders from allied professional bodies, including Zuwaira Kishimi, President of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, and Professor Pius Olanrewaju, President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
As Yahaya begins his term, expectations are high for continued reforms and strengthened professional standards across the accounting sector. His presidency is anticipated to build upon the foundation laid by his predecessors while steering ICAN toward a more globally competitive future.
