Several people have been trapped after a two-storey building collapsed at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop in the Oyingbo area of Lagos, in the early hours of Monday.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the incident occurred around 12:20 a.m., prompting an immediate response from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team. The agency’s Director, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that the building had earlier been marked as distressed before it gave way while residents were still inside.

“So far, 15 people seven men, four women, and four children have been rescued with varying injuries and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan,” Adeseye said, adding that rescue operations were ongoing.

Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often linked to poor regulation, substandard materials, and weak structural supervision. Similar incidents in Ikoyi (2021) and Yaba (2025) claimed multiple lives.
