In a major step toward promoting sustainable construction practices, Lafarge Africa Plc has launched ECOPlanet Elephant, a low-carbon, multipurpose cement designed to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance.
The new product, unveiled as an extension of the company’s ECOPlanet range, reinforces Lafarge Africa’s commitment to green innovation and follows the successful 2024 rollout of ECOPlanet Unicem. According to the company, ECOPlanet Elephant delivers up to 30% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to traditional cement, while maintaining high standards of strength, durability, and versatility.
Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Africa Plc, described the launch as a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to drive low-carbon construction and support sustainable urban development. “The success of ECOPlanet Unicem showed a strong market appetite for climate-friendly building solutions. With ECOPlanet Elephant, we are providing another powerful tool for builders and developers to lower their carbon footprint while still achieving exceptional results,” he said.
The new cement product is suitable for a variety of applications including concreting, plastering, and on-site block-making, and is backed by leading global sustainability certifications such as BREEAM, LEED, and EDGE.
Gbenga Onimowo, Commercial Director at Lafarge Africa, noted that the introduction of ECOPlanet Elephant ensures customers can transition smoothly to more eco-conscious building methods. “Elephant Cement has always been trusted for its reliability. This new low-carbon variant preserves that legacy while aligning with global calls for climate action. We’re excited about the positive impact this will have across the industry,” he added.
ECOPlanet Elephant is already gaining attention among professionals in the construction sector, offering a viable alternative for builders seeking to align with global environmental standards. Lafarge says the move is part of its broader strategy to support Nigeria’s green development goals and contribute to decarbonising the built environment in Africa.
