Lagos State will begin charging motorists for parking on designated streets before the end of 2026 under a new on-street parking scheme designed to improve traffic management and urban order.
The announcement was made by the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) during a stakeholder engagement with the Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area, Akeem Dauda, and his management team.
According to LASPA General Manager, Adebisi Adelabu, the initiative will be introduced as a pilot programme in selected local government areas, including Ikeja.
She explained that the scheme is aimed at bringing order to roadside parking, reducing traffic congestion, and creating job opportunities for residents within designated areas.
“The On-Street Parking Scheme will improve parking management, enhance traffic flow and generate employment opportunities, particularly for residents within the selected areas,” she said.
Adelabu also clarified that parking management was previously handled by local governments before being officially transferred to LASPA by the Conference of 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas.
She added that local councils will benefit from the initiative based on their level of cooperation, while urging them to support its implementation.
The Ikeja Local Government Chairman welcomed the plan and pledged support, calling for widespread public awareness ahead of the rollout.
The scheme is part of broader efforts by Lagos authorities to address chronic traffic congestion, especially in high-density commercial areas such as Ikeja, Lagos Island, Surulere, and Apapa.
Officials say indiscriminate roadside parking has long contributed to gridlock by reducing road capacity and obstructing traffic flow, leading to significant economic losses from reduced productivity.
With the new policy, the state government aims to introduce a more structured and regulated parking system that supports urban mobility and improves overall transportation efficiency.
