Efforts to curb the frequent menace of building collapse in Nigeria have received a major boost with the establishment of a state-owned material testing laboratory in Umuahia.
The initiative, unveiled by the Abia State Government, is designed to enforce strict quality control across construction projects while safeguarding lives and property.
Briefing journalists after this week’s Executive Council meeting, Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, described the facility as a strategic intervention in the state’s infrastructure sector. Installed within the premises of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), the laboratory is fully operational and equipped to conduct advanced tests on concrete, soil, aggregates, asphalt pavements, steel reinforcement, and other building materials.
UCDA General Manager, Kingsley Agomuo, warned that contractors who bypass integrity testing would face stiff penalties. “The era of substandard work is over. Every project must meet acceptable safety standards,” he said.
The government is also reviving dormant enterprises. Kanu announced that plans to reposition Abia Hotel Limited, Umuahia, are well advanced, in line with Governor Alex Otti’s policy of restoring moribund public assets. “No government property will be left to waste under Governor Otti,” he stressed.
In addition, the Commissioner disclosed that the second phase of the Abia TechRise ICT Training programme will commence on September 25, following the verification of 850 candidates across the state’s 17 LGAs. The scheme aims to equip young people with 21st-century digital skills.
On food security, Kanu revealed that the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, in partnership with local councils, is intensifying agricultural productivity. Part of this initiative includes building four prototype markets in each LGA, each with 40 stalls, solar-powered lighting, public conveniences, and charging stations.
To further engage the youth, the state is launching Abia Soccerfest, a competition designed to scout and nurture football talent from local communities.
Governor Otti’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, was present at the briefing, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to accountability, innovation, and sustainable development.
