In a gesture of solidarity, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has donated ₦300 million to assist victims affected by the recent flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State. The announcement was made during his visit to the Niger State Government House in Minna, where he led a delegation to express sympathy on behalf of the people of Borno.
The donation, according to Governor Zulum, aims to support the Niger State Government’s ongoing response efforts in the aftermath of the devastating floods, which reportedly claimed over 200 lives and displaced many families. The funds are intended to help ease the burden of recovery and provide relief for the affected communities.
While addressing journalists during the visit, Governor Zulum emphasized the urgency of collective action among state governments to combat the increasing frequency of climate-related disasters. He called on the Federal Government to establish a more effective national framework for disaster response and climate adaptation, citing the growing impact of environmental challenges across the country.
“It is time for all levels of government to unite and take proactive steps toward mitigating the effects of climate change,” Zulum stated. “Beyond relief, we need preventive strategies that protect lives and livelihoods.”
Niger State Governor Umar Bago, who received the delegation, expressed gratitude for the donation, describing it as a compassionate and timely gesture. He assured that the funds would be transparently utilized to aid those most affected by the tragedy.
“This act of support from Borno State shows genuine concern for fellow Nigerians,” Bago said. “We are committed to ensuring the donation reaches those in need, and we continue to advocate for safer settlement away from high-risk flood zones.”
As cleanup and recovery efforts continue in Mokwa and other affected areas, the intervention from Borno offers both material support and a reminder of the importance of unity and resilience in the face of natural disasters.
