The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a mix of sunshine, haze, and isolated thunderstorms across different regions of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
According to NiMet’s weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, northern states such as Katsina, Yobe, Kano, and Jigawa will experience sunny and hazy conditions on Sunday morning, while the rest of the North will remain generally sunny. Later in the day, southern Taraba is expected to record isolated thunderstorms.
In the central region, the agency predicts sunny skies with patches of clouds during the morning hours, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in Benue and Kogi later in the afternoon or evening.
For the southern region, NiMet anticipates a cloudy atmosphere with morning thunderstorms and light rain in areas such as Ebonyi, Ogun, Ondo, Imo, Abia, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected to continue across most parts of the region as the day progresses.
Moving into Monday, northern areas are likely to remain sunny, while southern Kaduna and southern Taraba may experience isolated thunderstorms. The central region will see sunny skies mixed with light clouds, with Benue, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory expected to record afternoon or evening rain showers.
Meanwhile, parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom could see morning thunderstorms, extending later to Enugu, Ogun, Oyo, Abia, Imo, and other states with moderate rainfall.
By Tuesday, the forecast indicates continued sunny and hazy weather in the North, partly cloudy conditions in the central region, and a cloudy and rainy pattern in the South. States such as Ogun, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Cross River may experience light to moderate rainfall throughout the day.
NiMet cautioned residents to drive carefully during rainfall and avoid applying fertilisers or pesticides just before expected rains to prevent nutrient loss.
The agency also urged Nigerians to secure loose objects, unplug electrical appliances during storms, and stay clear of tall trees to reduce the risk of accidents during windy weather.
NiMet further advised airline operators to obtain updated, airport-specific weather reports for flight planning and encouraged the public to stay informed through regular weather updates on its official website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
