As part of activities to mark his 100 days in office, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has officially commenced the dualisation of the 27.5-kilometre Igbokoda–Okitipupa Road, a major infrastructure project expected to improve regional access and stimulate economic activities across the Southern Senatorial District.
At the flag-off ceremony held in Igbokoda, the governor reiterated his administration’s goal of creating a development-friendly environment and strengthening Ondo’s position as a key destination for investment and tourism.
“This road project goes beyond just improving transportation—it’s a deliberate step toward unlocking the economic potential of our coastal communities,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He noted that the dual carriageway would significantly enhance logistics for the proposed Ondo Deep Seaport, a strategic initiative that received federal approval in the final months of the Buhari administration. The seaport, once completed, is expected to play a vital role in Nigeria’s growing marine and blue economy sectors.
“Our government is thinking ahead. We’re laying the foundation now for the opportunities that the seaport and our coastline offer. Infrastructure like this is how we prepare for the future,” the governor added.
The road, which links inland areas to the state’s coastal axis, is seen as critical for long-term economic planning. The project also aligns with national efforts to strengthen marine-based commerce and position the country as a regional logistics hub.
In his remarks, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, described the design specifications: a 27.5km stretch with designated setbacks and a total road width that will accommodate future traffic needs.
Residents and stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the project would not only ease transportation but also attract new investments and improve livelihoods in the region.
