More than 500 stalls were destroyed on Wednesday after a fire outbreak at Shuwaki Market in Gari Local Government Area of Kano State.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the incident occurred around 3:25 p.m. following an emergency call from Commander Abdulmalik Muhammad of the Gari Fire Station.
Firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Station were immediately deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the market — spanning about 3,000 by 2,500 feet with roughly 1,000 temporary stalls — engulfed in flames. Abdullahi said about 529 stalls were completely destroyed before the fire was contained.
“One jet from Comm 9 was used during the operation,” the statement added.
The fire service linked the cause of the inferno to the suspected actions of intoxicated individuals within the market area.
No casualties were recorded, but authorities have urged residents and traders to observe safety precautions to prevent future incidents.
