The Nigeria Police Force has removed Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Hundeyin as the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), barely six months after he assumed the role.
The development follows a leadership reshuffle within the police hierarchy initiated by the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.
Sources within the police confirmed that the decision to remove Hundeyin was approved on Thursday morning, marking one of the first major administrative changes under Disu’s leadership. The reasons for the decision have not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
Leadership transition in the police
The move comes less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu formally inaugurated Disu as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police, replacing Kayode Egbetokun.
Security analysts say changes in key positions are common when a new police chief assumes office, as incoming leadership often reorganises strategic units to align with its operational priorities.
According to sources familiar with the development, the directive for Hundeyin’s removal was issued early Thursday, sending ripples through the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
“The Force Public Relations Officer has been removed this morning,” a source within the police said, adding that officers were still awaiting official confirmation regarding his replacement.
Uncertainty over successor
As of press time, authorities have not announced who will take over the position of Force Public Relations Officer.
Sources within the force indicated that operations within the communications department have intensified as senior officers await directives from the police leadership.
“We don’t know who will take over from him yet, although many believed he would remain longer because of his expertise,” another insider said.
Observers note that such personnel changes are often part of broader institutional restructuring when new leadership takes charge of the nation’s top law enforcement agency.
Hundeyin’s professional background
Hundeyin, who hails from Badagry in Lagos State, was appointed Force Public Relations Officer by former police chief Kayode Egbetokun.
Before his appointment, he served as Police Public Relations Officer at the Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos.
He is an alumnus of Lagos State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English Language, and later obtained a master’s degree in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology from the University of Ibadan.
He also holds a certificate in Civil-Military Coordination from the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Training Centre in Jaji, Kaduna.
Professionally, Hundeyin is affiliated with several organisations including the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, the International Public Relations Association, and the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria.
His career within the police also includes participation in the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur peacekeeping operation.
Police restructuring under new leadership
The removal of Hundeyin signals the beginning of what many insiders describe as a broader restructuring effort within the Nigeria Police Force.
Security experts say such adjustments are typical when new leadership takes over the force, particularly as incoming Inspectors-General often assemble teams aligned with their strategic vision.
Disu, who recently assumed office as the nation’s top police officer, has pledged to reform the force, strengthen accountability and rebuild public confidence in policing across Nigeria.
Officials are expected to announce further administrative changes in the coming days as the new police leadership settles into office.
