According to the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG), Nigeria has recorded 653 building collapse incidents, claiming 1,616 lives, with the majority of casualties reported in major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt.

In recent months, several major cities have witnessed tragic incidents that claimed dozens of lives, injured scores, and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

Recently, Housing TV Africa reported the collapse of a three-storey building under construction near the Anambra State House of Assembly, trapping several workers and sending shockwaves through the community. Industry professionals stressed the urgent need to prioritize quality building materials despite the rising cost of construction.

Speaking exclusively to Housing Tv correspondent, Abiodun Osubu, Executive Director of the Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN), Barr. Festus Adebayo, emphasized the need for stronger preventive measures.

“The government must prioritize continuous training of site engineers and empower agencies to shut down unsafe sites before disasters happen,” he said.

Data from the BCPG further revealed that between 1974 and 2023, Nigeria recorded over 500 building collapse cases, with Lagos State alone accounting for more than 60 percent of incidents. Analysts warn the trend is worsening due to rapid urbanization, weak enforcement of building codes, and the use of substandard materials.

Stakeholders continue to call for stricter sanctions against contractors and developers found guilty of negligence. The Lagos State Government has also intensified demolition of illegal structures, including parts of the Lagos Trade Fair Complex, warning that non-compliance with planning and safety laws will no longer be tolerated.

Beyond enforcement, experts highlight the need for public awareness campaigns to discourage patronage of unqualified builders and unsafe construction practices.

Meanwhile, victims and families of collapse incidents continue to count their losses, as most disasters also expose the inadequacy of emergency response services.

Urban planners also caution that unless urgent steps are taken, the rising rate of building collapses could escalate into a full-blown public health and safety crisis for Nigeria.

According to a joint statement by BCPG’s Chairman, Engr. Nasir Illo, General Secretary Ibrahim Shittu, and PRO Sheshi Mohammed Raba, the destruction was intensified by the collapse of a railway embankment. The structure, which had been holding back unusually heavy rainfall recorded by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), ultimately failed—unleashing a powerful flood that ravaged homes, roads, and culverts in its path.

The Guild stressed that while the rain was a natural event, the scale of destruction was avoidable. The failure of critical infrastructure exposed the deadly consequences of weak systems in the face of climate-driven events. Floodwaters tore through Mokwa and spilled into River Niger via the River Dingi, overwhelming nearby villages such as Rabba.

BCPG is urging the Federal and Niger State governments to immediately provide emergency aid and begin full-scale rehabilitation. They’re also calling on the Nigerian Railway Corporation to launch a technical review of all railway dykes and culverts to prevent future failures. Planning authorities were advised to update building codes for high-risk areas, enforce the use of stronger materials, and ensure proper drainage and site selection.

In addition, the Guild pushed for improved flood early warning systems and more rigorous hydrological studies. They emphasized the need for state and local governments to strengthen disaster response frameworks with clear operational plans, funding, and training.

The Guild concluded by urging Nigeria to institutionalize post-disaster evaluations and use them to shape national policy. The Mokwa tragedy, they warned, is a harsh reminder that without resilient infrastructure and a commitment to preparedness, the country remains dangerously exposed.

Speaking during the BCPG Lagos State chapter sensitisation walks themed “Walking towards Zero Building Collapses,” National President Sulaimon Yusuf expressed deep concerns over the potential consequences of escalating building material costs.

Yusuf cautioned, “The anticipated increase in building material costs, including cement, fittings, and labor wages, may compel builders to resort to cost-cutting measures, resulting in a proliferation of substandard goods and the engagement of unqualified artisans.”

AIHS

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Yusuf emphasized the need for proactive measures to address the emerging challenges. He called upon government agencies such as the Ministry of Physical Planning and the Office of Urban Development to intensify efforts in enforcing building standards and supporting research on local building materials.

READ ALSO: Architects Sound Alarm on Soaring Building Material Costs, Warn of Project Delays

“The Standard Organisation of Nigeria must rigorously ensure that only quality building materials are available in the market,” Yusuf urged, stressing the importance of stringent quality control measures.

Moreover, Yusuf underscored the impact of the depreciating value of the naira on building material prices, urging the government to invest in vocational training programs for youths in the built environment and provide scholarships to encourage participation in related fields.

READ ALSO: Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers Vows to Combat Building Collapses

In addition, he recommended a review of regulatory fees, urging the government to prioritize regulation over revenue generation to incentivize compliance and foster a culture of adherence to building standards.

“The government must adopt progressive taxation principles for revenue generation, akin to practices in more developed nations,” Yusuf concluded, advocating for a holistic approach to address the challenges facing the construction industry.
