According to the Agence d’Information du Burkina (AIB), the state-run news platform, the interception followed a notification from the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), which said the transport aircraft entered Burkinabe airspace without the mandatory overflight clearance.

The aircraft, carrying 11 Nigerian military personnel—two crew members and nine passengers—was forced to land in Bobo-Dioulasso, a major city in southwestern Burkina Faso.

In a translated statement, AES explained that the aircraft had experienced an in-flight emergency but still failed to secure official approval before entering Burkinabe airspace.

The bloc stated:

“Investigations by Burkinabe authorities highlighted the absence of overflight authorisation for this military aircraft. The Confederation of Sahel States condemns with the utmost firmness this violation of its airspace and the sovereignty of its member states.”

AES added that it had ordered its air and anti-aircraft defence systems to remain on maximum alert, with strict instructions to neutralise any unauthorised aircraft entering territories under its defence zone.

As of press time, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the Federal Government of Nigeria had not issued an official response regarding the forced landing.

The incident comes amid heightened regional security tensions and tighter border control measures enforced by the Sahel alliance.

Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, three junta-led countries in the Sahel, have formally withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after over a year of diplomatic strain.

The exit, which took place on Wednesday, marks a significant turning point for the region’s most influential political and trade bloc, coinciding with ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary this year.

The rupture follows a series of coups that have swept across the region, starting with Mali in 2020, followed by Burkina Faso in 2022, and Niger in July 2023. The ECOWAS bloc, which had initially threatened military intervention in Niger to reinstate its ousted president, imposed severe economic sanctions, which were later lifted.

These tensions escalated when the three countries, founding members of ECOWAS, announced their decision to withdraw in January 2024. However, ECOWAS rules required a one-year notice for the decision to take effect.

In response to their departure, the three countries have formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a new confederation aimed at strengthening political and economic ties within the region. This move has left ECOWAS grappling with its future direction and internal unity. Omar Alieu Touray, head of ECOWAS, emphasized the bloc’s commitment to keeping its doors open, stating that any state could rejoin the community at any time. “We look forward to those discussions,” he said at a press conference in Abuja.

Despite their exit, ECOWAS has assured that citizens of the three countries will continue to benefit from visa-free movement, residence, and establishment under existing protocols. Additionally, goods and services from the three countries will be treated in line with ECOWAS regulations until a new decision is reached.

The military leaders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have voiced their dissatisfaction with ECOWAS, accusing the group of failing to address security concerns such as jihadist uprisings and being overly aligned with France, the former colonial power. In a shift away from their historical ties with France, the three nations have sought military support from Russia, Iran, and Turkey.

As ECOWAS navigates this unprecedented withdrawal, several member states, including Togo and Ghana, have already normalized relations with the three countries. Ghana’s new president, John Mahama, has appointed a special envoy to the Alliance of Sahel States, signaling ongoing regional realignments.

However, these challenges have sparked innovation and creativity among architects like Diébédo Francis Kéré and Albert Faus, who are using ingenious methods to create cool, welcoming spaces using cheap, local materials.

Kéré, who grew up in Gando, a small village in Burkina Faso, won the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 2022. He emphasizes the importance of community support, recalling how his entire village contributed to funding his education abroad.

AIHS

This sense of community is evident in his work, particularly in the Gando primary school, his first project after completing his studies. Despite initial skepticism from his community about using local materials like clay, the school’s construction became a collaborative effort, blending traditional techniques with modern technology for better comfort.

Kéré’s approach focuses on natural ventilation and thermal comfort. His buildings feature strong walls and light roofs that allow cool air to enter from below and push out hot air from above. One of his innovative solutions is the use of raised and extended metal roofs, inspired by vernacular architecture in the Persian Gulf. These roofs not only protect from direct sunlight and rain but also help in releasing hot air, providing a comfortable environment without the need for air conditioning.

The Noomdo orphanage, another of Kéré’s projects, exemplifies his sustainable and community-oriented approach. Pierre Sanou, a social educator at the orphanage, praises the building’s thermal comfort, noting that it stays cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather without the need for air conditioning, leading to significant energy savings. The orphanage’s design, shaped in a semicircle, prioritizes the privacy and security of its young inhabitants, with no fences or barbed wire.

Albert Faus, another architect working in Burkina Faso, designed the Bangre Veenem school complex in the village of Youlou. Like Kéré, Faus focused on using local materials and minimizing environmental impact. The complex, made from bricks of laterite stone, blends seamlessly into its surroundings and has become a source of pride for the community. The school’s design also prioritizes comfort, with students reporting that they can concentrate better in class thanks to the comfortable environment.

In a country where access to electricity is limited, both architects have incorporated sustainable solutions into their designs. Kéré’s buildings utilize natural light and ventilation, while Faus’s school complex is equipped with solar panels, allowing students to study and charge their phones at night.

By marrying traditional techniques with modern innovations, architects like Kéré and Faus are not only creating functional and sustainable buildings but also empowering communities and improving the lives of those they serve.
