The Nigerian Institution of Petroleum Engineers (NiPeTE) has announced a rebranding initiative that will see the professional body adopt a new name—the Nigerian Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers—as part of strategic efforts to enhance professionalism and accelerate growth in the country’s oil and gas sector.

Engr. Prisca Kanebi, Chairperson of NiPeTE, made this known during a press briefing in Lagos, where she outlined the Institute’s renewed vision and commitment to national development.

“We are charting a focused path that aligns with Nigeria’s economic aspirations,” Kanebi said. “Our goal is to contribute meaningfully through professionalism, technical excellence, and evidence-based policy support.”

AIHS Partners Top Real Estate Companies, Unveils Big Surprises and Rewards for 2025

She revealed that the name change has been approved by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), following broad consultations with industry stakeholders and academia. The Institute has also secured approval from the National Technical Board for its certification programmes and completed the second reading of its Bill at the National Assembly.

“The date for the public hearing will be announced soon. This rebranding reflects the scope and relevance of our work across both petroleum and gas disciplines,” she added.

Kanebi called on practising petroleum engineers—locally and in the diaspora—to register with the Institute, noting that the transition to a statutory body will elevate its influence in the energy sector.

She also addressed recent controversies, dismissing a disclaimer issued by a group allegedly trying to discredit the Institute’s leadership.

“Let me be clear: the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is not involved in any internal dispute. The actions of a few individuals are politically motivated attempts to hijack the system,” she stated.

Kanebi reaffirmed that the Board of Trustees, Governing Council, Executive Committee, and diaspora members remain unified in their support for the Institute’s mission.

A powerful message is making waves in Nigeria’s engineering community young female engineers need more than technical skills. They need creativity, confidence, and bold ideas to lead the future.

During a recent webinar hosted by the Lagos chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Associate Professor Olayinka Adewunmi of the University of Lagos made this clear.

Adewunmi, who also leads the Innovation and Technology Management Office at UNILAG, said engineering education must evolve. Students, especially women, should be trained to solve real problems using fresh thinking. For her, innovation isn’t just about changing machines. It’s about finding new ways to tackle complex challenges in society.

19th Edition Africa International Housing Show

She urged stakeholders to support programs that highlight the creative talents of young female engineers. These innovation challenges help students explore entrepreneurship, build networks, and gain mentorship. They also boost their confidence. Adewunmi stressed that such programs should inspire new ideas, challenge outdated practices, and align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Today’s engineering problems are more complex than ever. And the skills needed to solve them are just as demanding. Adewunmi said engineers must now be strong communicators, good team players, and have a passion for sustainability. They should also know how to use modern design tools and apply classroom lessons to real-world issues. From building homes to water systems, young engineers need hands-on experience that makes a real difference.

Dr. Atinuke Owolabi, APWEN Lagos Chair, backed this message with enthusiasm. She said her chapter is on a mission to grow female participation in engineering. Their SHEnovation program is built to inspire creative thinking, encourage bold solutions, and prepare women to lead. Owolabi challenged young female engineers to think beyond the ordinary. She urged them to embrace technology and use it to change industries and communities for the better.

She added that innovation is not just a buzzword—it is the heartbeat of progress. Female engineers must become problem-solvers who don’t just fix issues but completely rethink how things are done.

As technology changes rapidly and global challenges grow, creative education is no longer optional—it’s critical. The message is simple but strong: the future needs more women who think big, act boldly, and design fearlessly.

This call comes in response to the frequent infrastructural failures in the country, which have put immense pressure on the engineering community, particularly civil and structural engineers.

Speaking at the investiture ceremony of Johnson Adegboyega Adeyoye as the 22nd president of NIStructE, Prof. Ikponmwosa Ewaen emphasized the need for the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to ensure that practicing licenses and seals issued to engineers specify their specialization and practice areas.

He identified structural defects as the leading cause of building collapse and urged engineers to adhere to ethical standards or face sanctions.

Ewaen stated, “For any infrastructure that fails in Nigeria, the first culprit or the first accused professional is the engineer.

READ ALSO: Nigerian Engineers Embrace Bamboo as Alternative to Iron Rods

This explains why the burden of infrastructural collapses in Nigeria should be borne by the engineers, particularly the structural/civil engineers.”

He also called for a re-engineering of the national character of engineers in line with global best practices to prevent further infrastructure collapses.

Ewaen acknowledged past errors in managing crises but emphasized that stricter measures would improve engineering practice in Nigeria.

In his inaugural speech, Adeyoye highlighted the importance of regulations in shaping various sectors of the economy, including structural engineering. He urged the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to ensure that all cement brands for construction purposes meet minimum global standards.

READ ALSO: APWEN Lagos Chapter Launches Technology Innovation Hub to Empower Female Engineers

Adeyoye also advocated for the establishment of materials testing centers in all states and encouraged institutions of higher learning to participate in quality control and assurance services.

Adeyoye expressed concern over the high prices of cement and other construction materials in Nigeria, noting that this could lead to continued incidents of building collapse. He called on the government to take action to ensure reasonable and affordable prices for these materials.

The NIStructE, founded in Lagos in 1967, aims to provide professional training and development opportunities in the field of structural engineering in Nigeria.
