Baobab Microfinance Bank has launched the first phase of its Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Project in Ilorin, Kwara State, reaffirming its commitment to improving community well-being and supporting underserved populations. The initiative, implemented in partnership with Sisters of Jannah, provided 500 reusable sanitary pads to schoolgirls in a carefully selected beneficiary school.

The bank said the project was designed to address period poverty, a challenge that continues to affect many adolescent girls in low-income communities by contributing to school absenteeism, reduced academic performance, and, in severe cases, school dropout. By distributing reusable sanitary pads, the initiative seeks to provide a sustainable and cost-effective solution that enables girls to manage menstrual health with dignity and continue their education without interruption.

Chief Business Development Officer of Baobab Microfinance Bank Nigeria, Joy Micheal-Oti, said every girl deserves the opportunity to learn without disruption, stressing that menstrual health is a basic right. She noted that the intervention in Ilorin marks the beginning of a broader commitment to tackling period poverty across Nigeria.

Social Performance Manager, Barisi Samuels, explained that the project goes beyond the distribution of sanitary products by promoting dignity, confidence, and reassurance for young girls. The reusable pads were supplied by Sana Pads, a female-owned enterprise based in Kano that focuses on sustainable menstrual health solutions.

Representatives of Sisters of Jannah said their grassroots knowledge helped identify the school with the greatest need and ensured that support reached vulnerable girls within the community. The organisation described the collaboration as an example of how partnerships can drive meaningful and lasting change.

Baobab Microfinance Bank disclosed that the Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Project will be expanded to other states through its network of 38 branches across 16 states, with additional beneficiary schools and implementation plans to be announced in due course.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Segun Ogunsola, received the estate’s documents and keys during a formal handover ceremony. The governor said the acquisition forms part of his administration’s efforts to reduce the housing deficit and expand access to affordable housing across the state. “This is another effort to bridge the housing deficit in Kwara and provide sustainable accommodation for residents,” he said. The estate comprises 132 housing units, including one-, two-, and three-bedroom detached and semi-detached buildings designed to cater to different income groups. Representing the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the Director of Public Buildings and Housing, Architect Musa Abdullahi, commended the state government for taking over the project in the public interest. He noted that the National Housing Programme was initiated to address Nigeria’s housing shortfall and improve access to decent housing nationwide. Dangiwa also disclosed that the Federal Government has awarded a contract for a new Renewed Housing Estate in Kwara, with construction expected to commence soon. The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Shuaib Belgore, described the handover as a reflection of effective collaboration between federal and state governments. He added that the development underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure and support economic growth in the state. Nigeria continues to face a significant housing deficit, particularly in urban areas, driven by population growth, urban migration, and years of underinvestment in public housing.

Two children have been rescued following the collapse of a two-storey residential building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at about 9:10 a.m. on Ajegunle Street, off Sabo-Line in the Isale area, where a six-flat building reportedly gave way, raising renewed concerns about structural safety in residential properties.

Children Rescued Before Emergency Arrival

According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the children were trapped in the rubble shortly after the collapse but were rescued before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The Fire Service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the rescue and identified the children as Ahmad (8) and Hussainat (10).

He explained that both children were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention after being pulled from the debris.

Firefighters Begin Salvage Operations

Following the arrival of emergency responders, firefighters commenced salvage operations at the site.

Officials recovered items from accessible sections of the building, including clothing, electronics, food supplies, and important personal documents belonging to residents.

The operation also involved assessing the extent of damage and ensuring no additional victims were trapped within the structure.

Authorities Flag Safety Risks in Adjacent Buildings

After an on-site inspection, the Fire Service raised concerns about the structural integrity of nearby buildings.

It recommended that the Disaster Management Department of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) take immediate action to prevent further risk in the area.

The recommendation included sealing off the collapsed structure and issuing a seven-day ultimatum for evacuation of a neighbouring building deemed unsafe for habitation.

The NSCDC Disaster Management unit subsequently sealed off the affected site and enforced evacuation directives on the adjacent structure.

Prior Warning Signs Reported

Officials also disclosed that the caretaker of the collapsed building had previously been alerted to the deteriorating condition of the property before the incident occurred.

This development has intensified concerns over enforcement of building safety regulations and early intervention by property stakeholders.

Fire Service Urges Preventive Maintenance

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, who supervised operations at the scene, urged property owners to prioritize regular structural integrity checks.

He emphasized the importance of responding promptly to early warning signs such as wall cracks, weak foundations, and visible structural defects.

According to him, proactive maintenance and compliance with safety standards remain critical to preventing avoidable building collapses.

At least 75 residents have been buried following a violent attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, officials confirmed. Several others remain missing, sending shockwaves across the nation.

The Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Omar, verified on Wednesday night that 75 bodies had been laid to rest, while more residents are yet to be accounted for. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has arrived in Kaiama to assess the situation and commiserate with affected families.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed that the attack began around 6pm on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said security forces have been deployed to the area, and investigations into missing persons are ongoing.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq described the incident as a brutal attack by extremists targeting villagers for resisting a distorted religious doctrine. He noted that this massacre is unlike previous incidents involving kidnappings or property raids, labeling it a cowardly act by terrorist cells.

Addressing the Emir of Kaiama, the governor said, “We commiserate with you over the death of 75 of your subjects. These villagers abide by their Islamic faith and refused to alter their doctrine, leading to this targeted attack. It is truly condemnable.”

The Woro community massacre highlights the persistent security challenges in Nigeria, particularly from extremist groups targeting civilians for ideological reasons. Authorities continue to investigate and provide support to affected families, while security agencies intensify efforts to prevent further attacks. you want me to do that?

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed a residential building in the Agbo-Oba area of Ilorin following confirmed violations of environmental safety regulations.

The agency said the building was shut down due to the illegal disposal of human waste mixed with sand along a public roadside—an act deemed dangerous to public health and contrary to the state’s sanitation laws.

The enforcement, which took place on Monday, was led by KWEPA’s Environmental Task Force under the supervision of Alhaji Yinusa Jidah. The operation aligns with the agency’s broader mandate to ensure a clean and disease-free environment across the state.

Speaking on the development, KWEPA’s General Manager, Jide Aina, emphasized that the move was not targeted at any individual but aimed at correcting environmental infractions and preventing potential outbreaks of disease.

“Our duty is to safeguard public health by ensuring that all residents observe proper sanitation and waste disposal practices,” Aina said in a statement released by the agency’s press secretary, Aliyu Amode. “Environmental protection is a shared responsibility, and we urge residents to cooperate by maintaining clean surroundings and reporting infractions.”

The agency further warned that failure to adhere to proper sanitation standards, especially in densely populated areas, would attract strict penalties. Aina noted that KWEPA remains committed to proactive monitoring and enforcement efforts to uphold environmental regulations across the state.

KWEPA also appealed to the general public to respect existing environmental protection laws to help promote sustainable and healthy living conditions.

This the latest enforcement brings to at least five the number of properties sealed in the Agbo-Oba and Kuntu areas of Ilorin since January 2025 over similar environmental infractions.

Protests erupted in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State on Monday as enraged youths set fire to the office of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and vandalised parts of the Emir’s palace, in response to escalating insecurity across their communities.

The demonstrators, primarily youths from affected villages, voiced deep frustration over the growing spate of kidnappings, killings, and violent attacks by suspected criminal groups. Chanting slogans and calling for urgent intervention, they decried what they described as years of abandonment by both local authorities and traditional leaders.

“We are no longer safe. People are being kidnapped almost every day, and we live in fear. No one is coming to our aid—not the governor, not the chairman, not even the Emir,” a protester said.

The protest followed a series of abductions in recent days that have left residents terrified. Local sources reported that three people, including a popular Point of Sale (POS) operator identified as “Yman,” were abducted in two separate incidents between Sunday night and Monday morning. Yman was reportedly taken from Lafiagi town, while two other victims were kidnapped during a violent raid on Kokodo village. A young girl reportedly escaped the attackers by fleeing into the bush.

The unrest intensified after the abduction of a well-known agro-chemical trader, Alhaji Chemical, who was seized from his residence around 1 a.m. on Sunday. Witnesses said the kidnappers, armed with sophisticated weapons, arrived on motorcycles and overpowered the local vigilante group before fleeing with their victim.

“This protest didn’t happen overnight,” said another resident. “We’ve endured repeated attacks and kidnappings. The government has ignored us, and people have reached their breaking point.”

The protests, which turned violent, saw protesters break windows and damage property at the Emir’s palace while demanding accountability from traditional and political leaders. The burning of the NDLEA office was seen as a symbolic expression of frustration over perceived state inaction.

As of press time, security personnel had been deployed to restore order in the community. However, there has been no official response from the Kwara State Government or the Emir of Lafiagi regarding the demonstrations or the ongoing security crisis. Concerns continue to mount across Kwara North, with calls for sustained government intervention to address insecurity in the region.

The Kwara State Government has commenced land mapping and acquisition across various local government areas as part of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Mass Housing Scheme aimed at providing 100 housing units in each of the country’s 774 LGAs.

The initiative, under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is a collaboration between the Federal and Kwara State governments to expand access to quality and affordable housing for Nigerians.

Kwara State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Segun Ogunsola, led the inspection tour alongside technical experts from the ministry and the Kwara Geographical Information Service. The team engaged with traditional rulers and local stakeholders in the designated areas, describing the exercise as a critical implementation phase of the national housing drive.

According to a statement by the ministry’s Press Secretary, Kunle Gbadeyan, Ogunsola expressed appreciation for the cooperation of local communities and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving citizens’ lives through infrastructure and shelter.

“This project will directly benefit the people and significantly improve housing access in Kwara,” the commissioner stated during visits to communities in Ajase Ipo, Erin Ile, Offa, Oke Onigbin, Ekan Meje, and Osi, spanning Irepodun, Oyun, Offa, Isin, Oke Ero, and Ekiti LGAs.

Earlier visits were also made to Kaiama and Baruten LGAs. At the Emir of Kaiama’s palace, Ogunsola assured residents that the housing scheme would help close the housing deficit in the area. The Emir, represented by Waziri Kaiama, Alhaji Adamu Gene, commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s efforts in driving development across the state.

In Ilesha-Baruba, the commissioner was received by the Emir, Prof. Halidu Abubakar, who welcomed the project, noting that it would complement ongoing development in the town, including the recently completed Kwara State University campus.

Community leaders across the selected areas expressed support for the project while calling for increased engagement of local businesses in its execution to enhance grassroots economic impact.

The Kwara State Government has ordered the closure of Harmony Holdings Limited and its struggling subsidiaries following years of financial losses and non-performance.

This decision was reached at the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday in Ilorin, presided over by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. The council resolved to dissolve the company and revert all state-owned assets under its control to the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) for more efficient management.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Communications, Mrs. Bolanle Olukoju, the government said the move was necessary to stop the financial hemorrhaging and restore value to state investments.

The Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, who presented the review, revealed that despite multiple bailouts, loans, and grants extended to Harmony Holdings since its inception in 2012, the state had not received any returns on its investment.

“Huge public funds were pumped into the company and its subsidiaries like Harmony Transport Services, Harmony Insurance Brokers, and Harmony Investment and Property Development Company, yet none has yielded profit,” Nuru stated.

Only Harmony Securities Limited was reported to have made any profit, while the rest have remained liabilities to the state, with their financial positions falling below acceptable industry standards. According to the commissioner, a financial analysis showed that the companies’ quick ratios—a key measure of liquidity—were below 1:1, indicating they could not meet their short-term obligations.

The government emphasized that continuing to fund these entities was no longer sustainable. Dr. Nuru proposed transferring the management of their assets and liabilities to MOFI, a state-owned investment vehicle, to reduce recurring losses and ensure better oversight.

The council approved the recommendation, which will now be forwarded to the Kwara State House of Assembly for legislative ratification.

Officials said the move aligns with broader public sector reforms aimed at improving transparency, minimizing waste, and ensuring prudent management of government resources.
