The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has identified 2,658 illegal admissions conducted by 17 tertiary institutions during the 2024/2025 academic session.

According to JAMB, the affected institutions bypassed the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), the official platform for regulating and validating all admission offers in Nigeria.

Data released by the board show that Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University recorded the highest number of irregular admissions with 1,847 cases, followed by Osun State University with 492.

Other schools implicated include Abubakar Tafari Ali Polytechnic, the University of Calabar, and Redeemer’s University.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, warned that institutions found guilty of such practices would face strict sanctions, including the withdrawal of accreditation and disciplinary action against involved officials.

JAMB reiterated that all admissions carried out outside the CAPS framework remain invalid and that affected students may lose eligibility for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

Six National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have sued the Anambra State Government for ₦1 billion over alleged assault and unlawful detention by the state vigilante group, Agunechemba.

The corps members — Jennifer Elohor, Greatness Oyeh, Eze Ikenna, Anighoro Godspower, Feyisara Amore, and Chimenum Wonodi, filed the suit at the Federal High Court, Awka.

They cited a viral August video showing armed vigilantes storming their lodge, beating them, and accusing them of being internet fraudsters. One victim, Elohor, was reportedly stripped naked despite showing her NYSC ID.

Through their lawyer, Cyrus Onu, they listed the state government, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the Attorney-General, and the vigilante group as respondents.

They are seeking ₦1 billion in damages and a public apology in national newspapers for the alleged violation of their fundamental rights.

In a bold move to curb youth unemployment and stimulate economic growth, the Bank of Industry (BOI) has announced a N2 billion entrepreneurship initiative tailored exclusively for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) across Nigeria.

Dubbed the “N2bn BOI–NYSC Entrepreneurship Programme,” the scheme offers serving corps members access to loans of up to N5 million each at an attractive single-digit interest rate of 9% per annum. Beneficiaries will enjoy flexible repayment terms spanning three years, including a grace period of three months during which both principal and interest payments are deferred.

At the official launch event held in Abuja on Wednesday, Shekarau Omar, Executive Director for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) at BOI, described the initiative as a strategic intervention to transition young Nigerians from job-seekers to job creators.

Representing BOI’s Managing Director, Dr. Olasupo Olusi, Omar highlighted the enduring partnership between BOI and NYSC, which builds upon previous successes such as the Graduate Entrepreneurship Fund (GEF). Launched in 2015, the GEF has so far trained over 3,000 graduates, financed 609 startups, and disbursed more than N1 billion in loans.

“These figures are far more than statistics; they represent thriving poultry farms, fashion houses, salons, technology startups, and creative studios nurtured by young entrepreneurs,” Omar said. “The core takeaway is unmistakable: targeted capacity building combined with affordable financing and mentorship drives repayment, employment, and growth.”

Omar also praised the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) department for its pivotal role in equipping corps members with practical skills and entrepreneurial acumen, noting that the new loan programme is designed to complement SAED’s efforts.

“To all corps members, your service year is a launchpad, not a waiting room,” Omar advised. “Start small, plan meticulously, and maintain discipline in cash flow and compliance. With creativity and perseverance, you can become the next generation of entrepreneurs who will shape Nigeria’s economic future.”

The initiative is poised to provide critical financial support to thousands of young Nigerians, enabling them to harness their potential and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet following widespread allegations that he forged his academic and NYSC certificates.

The Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the resignation in a statement on Tuesday, bringing to an abrupt end Nnaji’s 14-month tenure as one of the administration’s pioneer ministers.

The embattled minister has been at the centre of controversy since an investigative report by Premium Times alleged that he falsified the academic credentials he submitted for ministerial screening. The report detailed findings from a two-year investigation, revealing discrepancies in the certificates Nnaji claimed to have obtained from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

While Nnaji maintained that he graduated from UNN in 1975, the institution reportedly could not verify that he completed his academic programme. The Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Professor Simon Ortuanya, was quoted as saying that although Nnaji was admitted in 1981, “he did not complete his studies and was never awarded a degree.”

The investigation further claimed that the NYSC could not authenticate the discharge certificate the minister submitted to the presidency and other government institutions. NYSC officials were said to have described the document as “strange” and not traceable within their records.

The allegations, which have trailed Nnaji since his nomination in July 2023, intensified in recent weeks, prompting mounting public pressure and calls for his resignation.

Neither Nnaji nor the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology has issued an official statement addressing the allegations as of press time.

‎Speaking through the Director of Consumer Affairs Bureau, Mrs. Freda Ruth Bruce-Bennett, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, said the Commission remains committed to protecting telecom subscribers’ interests in Nigeria’s fast-changing digital space.

‎The sensitisation, themed “Consumer Sensitisation on Data Depletion: The Role of National Youth Service Corps Members”, was organised in response to rising complaints by consumers about unexplained data usage.

‎During the session, the NCC outlined major causes of excessive data consumption, such as video streaming, automatic app updates, and hotspot sharing. Corps Members were also given practical tips on smart data management, including monitoring usage, restricting background data, and activating data-saving modes.

‎The Commission urged the Corps Members to serve as “Consumer Champions”, spreading awareness on telecom rights and helping others adopt effective data management practices.

‎To make the exercise more engaging, NCC organised an interactive quiz competition where participants won prizes, including power banks, airtime, and data bundles.
