Chaos unfolded in Gyenbwas, a village in Langai district of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, where 96 houses were set ablaze in a violent overnight attack that left three people dead and scores displaced.

According to residents, the assailants looted food items, livestock, mattresses, and valuables before setting homes and properties on fire.

Traditional ruler Alhaji Yakubu Umar confirmed the destruction, stating that one more body was discovered on Tuesday following the deaths of two people the previous day.

The village, once known for its peaceful nature, now lies in ruins, with families left homeless and traumatized. Umar expressed deep shock, noting that the attackers also destroyed farming tools, clothing, and food supplies worth millions of naira.

Locals have accused members of the Berom ethnic group of masterminding the attack, but the Berom Youth Moulders Association has denied any involvement. Dalyop Solomon, president of the group, claimed that three Berom farmers were attacked in the area and are currently receiving medical attention. He maintained that his people were acting in self-defense and dismissed the accusations as a cover-up by Fulani groups trying to justify violence.

As accusations and counter-claims fuel further division, the community has appealed to both the Plateau State government and Mangu LGA for a thorough investigation and immediate support for those who lost everything. For the residents of Gyenbwas, the smoke has cleared—but the wounds remain open.

The land in question, allocated to the Kurudu residents by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) authority, was originally part of a relocation effort from Nyanya. Known as the “Kurudu Relocation Layout,” this area was approved by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), with plots typically spanning around 1000sqm.

The residents, many of whom are indigenous to the region, now face the grim reality of their properties being targeted for demolition without cause or warning.

Comrade Matthew Shekwo, spokesperson for the Concerned FCT Indigenes Initiative, spoke out about the situation, highlighting that similar incidents have occurred in neighboring areas like Jikwoyi and Kpeyegi, with land grabbing and forced demolitions becoming a disturbing trend. Shekwo expressed deep concern that the same fate is now befalling the Kurudu Relocation Layout.

On January 27, a group of individuals, escorted by armed security personnel, began demolishing homes and businesses in the area. This forced action has created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety, particularly among the traders at the nearby Kurudu Timber Shed Market, who now worry about losing their livelihoods.

With frustration mounting and no resolution in sight, Shekwo emphasized that the group will not remain silent. If swift intervention from the FCT Minister is not forthcoming, they are prepared to lead a protest, seeking justice for the victims of this unlawful action. They are demanding an end to the demolitions and the protection of their homes from further encroachment.

“The properties of Anambra State domiciled in Enugu, following the sharing of assets of the old Anambra State, are not for sale,” Anyaonu affirmed.

He explained that after the creation of Anambra and Enugu states in August 1991, the Federal Government facilitated the division of assets between the two states in 1992. While there have been no issues with the properties inherited by Anambra in Abuja and Lagos, those in Enugu are reportedly being targeted by individuals attempting to sell them.

“Anyone who attempts to purchase any of these properties from impostors is doing so at their own risk,” Anyaonu cautioned.
