Speaking in commemoration of 2026, the National Chairman of AWTPN, , said empowering women in urban planning would significantly improve community development and governance.

Empowering Women for Sustainable Urban Development

Okoye explained that the 2026 theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights the importance of investing in women and girls to achieve equitable and prosperous cities.

According to her, including women in decision-making processes within the urban planning sector will strengthen development outcomes and ensure that cities are designed to meet the needs of all residents.

She said empowering women planners will help build cities that are more sustainable, resilient and socially inclusive.

Challenges Facing Women Town Planners

Despite growing participation in the built environment sector, Okoye noted that women town planners still face structural and cultural barriers limiting their career advancement.

She identified several challenges affecting female professionals, including:

• Limited access to leadership positions
• Inadequate representation in decision-making bodies
• Societal stereotypes
• Limited opportunities for professional development

According to her, these obstacles slow down progress not only for women but also for the entire urban planning profession.

Call for Policy Reforms

To address these challenges, the AWTPN chairman urged policymakers to introduce targeted reforms that support women’s advancement in the sector.

She recommended measures such as leadership quotas where necessary, mentorship programmes, professional training and the creation of inclusive workplace environments in both public and private institutions.

Promoting Gender-Responsive Urban Planning

Okoye emphasised that gender-responsive planning plays a key role in solving urban challenges.

She explained that when women participate actively in planning processes, cities become safer and more accessible, with better infrastructure supporting economic and social opportunities.

According to her, integrating women’s experiences into planning improves areas such as public safety, mobility, housing design and access to essential services.

AWTPN Initiatives to Support Women

The association is also implementing several initiatives to support women in urban planning.

These include mentorship programmes, professional workshops and training sessions designed to equip women with skills in sustainable urban development, climate resilience and leadership.

AWTPN is also engaging students through outreach programmes in secondary schools and tertiary institutions to encourage young girls to pursue careers in urban and regional planning.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank, Robert Orya, to a cumulative 490 years imprisonment over a N2.4 billion fraud.

The conviction followed a prolonged trial instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over financial crimes allegedly committed during Orya’s tenure as NEXIM boss between 2011 and 2016.

Justice F.E. Messiri delivered the judgment on Thursday, February 5, 2026, after finding Orya guilty on all 49 counts bordering on fraud, criminal breach of trust and abuse of office.

The court handed down a 10-year prison sentence on each count, amounting to a total of 490 years behind bars.

According to the EFCC, Orya was prosecuted on charges including impersonation, misappropriation, official corruption and fraudulent diversion of public funds.

In a statement issued after the ruling, the anti-graft agency confirmed that the conviction was secured by its counsel, Samuel Ugwuegbulam.

The commission stated that Orya was arraigned before the FCT High Court, Apo, Abuja, on November 25, 2021, following investigations into transactions linked to the management of the development bank.

The court found that the former NEXIM managing director abused his office to unlawfully obtain over N1.368 billion from the bank through fraudulent schemes executed during his leadership period.

Justice Messiri held that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, relying on documentary evidence and witness testimonies presented during the trial.

The judgment marks one of the heaviest cumulative jail terms imposed on a former top public official in Nigeria over financial crimes.

The EFCC described the ruling as a strong signal in the fight against corruption and abuse of public office, particularly within government-owned financial institutions.

The death toll from the devastating fire that razed the former Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building on Lagos Island has risen to 12, following the recovery of four additional bodies from the rubble, emergency authorities have confirmed.

The inferno, which occurred on the eve of Christmas at the 22-storey structure, has continued to present significant challenges to rescue and recovery teams due to the building’s weakened structural integrity and the scale of debris at the site.

In response to the complexity of the operation, the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has deployed heavy-duty excavation and recovery equipment provided by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to support ongoing operations.

NEMA disclosed that the multi-agency recovery exercise has recorded notable progress, particularly with the controlled removal of debris that enabled the recovery of four bodies trapped beneath collapsed sections of the building.

According to the agency, the operation remains highly technical and delicate, requiring careful excavation to prevent further structural collapse while ensuring the safety of emergency responders working on-site.

The recovered bodies have been officially documented and transferred to the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) for forensic identification and dignified handling, as investigations into the identities of the victims continue.

Security around the incident perimeter remains tight, with the military, police, and other security agencies maintaining barricades to restrict unauthorized access and safeguard both emergency personnel and members of the public.

Meanwhile, a high-level coordination meeting involving NEMA’s Lagos Operations Office and key stakeholders was convened to review progress and outline the next phase of operations. Participants included the Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Gbenga Oyerinde; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Arc GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde; and representatives of the local Community Development Association (CDA).

A prominent Islamic cleric based in Kaduna State, Sheikh Abubakar Alkali Zaria, has declared that residents of northern Nigeria will not comply with the newly approved tax reforms scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.

In a video circulating on social media, the cleric criticised the tax laws, describing them as inconsistent with the will of the people and democratic principles. He warned that northern lawmakers who supported the reforms would face backlash from their constituents upon returning home.

“We are waiting to see who will come and force us to pay these taxes,” Alkali said in the video. “Those who were sent to represent us but supported this law will have to answer to the people.”

Alkali also referenced the removal of fuel subsidy, arguing that the policy did not improve the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, and accused the government of imposing economic decisions without adequate public consent.

Controversy has continued to trail President Bola Tinubu’s tax reforms following claims by Abdussamad Dasuki, a House of Representatives member from Sokoto State, that discrepancies existed between the version of the tax bills passed by lawmakers and the copies later signed into law.

Several political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Borno South Senator Ali Ndume, have called on President Tinubu to suspend implementation of the reforms pending the outcome of investigations into the alleged alterations.

“The plan to commence the new tax laws on January 1, 2026, remains unchanged,” Oyedele said, adding that the reforms were designed to provide economic relief and strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal framework.

Many people are feared dead following a bomb explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred at about 6:10 p.m. at a Juma’at Mosque in Gamboru Ward, around the Customs area of the city, while Muslim worshippers were observing the Maghrib prayer.

Residents who spoke to our source by phone said the explosion, believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), killed and injured several worshippers. The attackers are suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents, although official confirmation is still awaited.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, ASP Nahum Daso, said he could not immediately confirm the blast but disclosed that he was heading to the scene to assess the situation and gather details.

The explosion has heightened fear and tension across Maiduguri, particularly among residents preparing for the 2025 Christmas celebrations. Security operatives have since cordoned off the affected area to prevent further casualties and allow for preliminary investigations.

United States President Donald Trump has signed a new Proclamation expanding America’s travel ban, placing additional entry restrictions on foreign nationals from 15 more countries, including Nigeria.

The Proclamation, which Trump said is aimed at protecting the security of the United States, introduces partial entry restrictions on nationals of Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The new order also maintains full travel restrictions on nationals of 12 countries previously classified as high-risk. These are Afghanistan, Burma (Myanmar), Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

In addition, the Proclamation imposes full entry restrictions on five more countries following what U.S. authorities described as a recent security assessment.

The affected countries are Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan and Syria. The order also applies to individuals travelling with Palestinian Authority–issued travel documents.

Two countries, Laos and Sierra Leone, which were previously under partial restrictions, have now been moved to the list of countries facing full entry limitations. Partial restrictions will, however, continue to apply to nationals of Burundi, Cuba, Togo and Venezuela.

Trump said Turkmenistan was granted limited relief under the new Proclamation after engaging productively with the United States and demonstrating significant progress.

As a result, the ban on non-immigrant visas for Turkmen nationals has been lifted, although restrictions on immigrant visas remain in place.

The Proclamation provides exemptions for lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, diplomats, athletes and individuals whose entry is considered to be in the national interest of the United States.

It also tightens family-based immigrant visa provisions due to what U.S. authorities described as demonstrated fraud risks, while retaining the option for case-by-case waivers.

The expanded travel restrictions are expected to affect travel plans, visa processing and migration flows, particularly across Africa and parts of the Caribbean, with Nigeria among the most notable additions.

There was grief, wailing, and intense tension at the Asaba Public Cemetery in Delta State as the bodies of three tenants killed during a violent land dispute in Okwe were laid to rest.

The victims — Mohammed Murtsla (Bauchi State), Kabiru Abdullahi, and Yahaya — were buried shortly after Islamic prayers. The ceremony was attended by Delta State Government officials and operatives of security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS).

The three men were shot dead on Monday after gunmen dressed in vigilante uniforms allegedly stormed a large residential compound at Kilometre 1, Asaba–Benin Expressway, Okwe, opening fire on tenants, most of whom were northerners. Seven others sustained gunshot and machete wounds during the two-hour attack.

Threat Issued Before the Attack — Community Leader

Chairman of Abraka Quarters, Auwalu Dalhatu, who conducted journalists around the compound after the burial, said the attackers had first invaded the premises on Friday, November 21, ordering tenants to vacate by Monday, November 24, or face severe consequences.

According to him, the gang claimed they were hired by Chief Jerry Nkeweshe, who is laying claim to the property despite a court-certified document identifying Mr. Kingsley Ijebuonwu as the rightful owner.

Auwalu said he reported the initial threat to the ‘B’ Division Police Station in Asaba, where officers assured him of protection and instructed tenants to call if the invaders returned.

“But when the gunmen came back on Monday and we called, the police never showed up,” he said.

He claimed he saw Nkeweshe at the scene, accompanied by a man he identified as “Fire Muller,” who allegedly commanded the shooters to open fire.

Auwalu urged the state government and security agencies to protect surviving tenants and ensure justice and compensation for the families of the deceased.

Estate Manager Calls for Calm

Chief Wilfred Egwuonwu, CEO of Willwal Agency Limited and estate manager to the documented property owner, said Nkeweshe had repeatedly launched violent attempts to assert ownership of the land. He urged tenants to remain calm while investigations continue.

Police Declare Chief Nkeweshe Wanted

The Delta State Police Command has declared Chief Jerry Nkeweshe, the Owelle of Onicha-Olona, wanted over the killings.

Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development, stating that investigations are ongoing and suspects connected to the deadly attack are being tracked.

Nkeweshe Denies Involvement, Issues 14-Day Ultimatum

Through his lawyer, Kelechi Nnadi, Nkeweshe denied involvement in the killings and described the police statement as “inaccurate and damaging.”

According to Nnadi, Nkeweshe was nowhere near Okwe at the time of the attack.

“On the morning of November 24, 2025, Chief Nkeweshe departed Asaba at about 8:30 a.m. for medical attention in Umunede, where he remained throughout the day with witnesses,” the lawyer said.

He added that Nkeweshe returned later in the evening to prepare for a scheduled court appearance the following day.

Nnadi accused the police of issuing statements containing inaccuracies, alleging a pattern of harassment against his client. He issued a 14-day ultimatum demanding a retraction and public apology from the Commissioner of Police and the PPRO.

Failure to comply, he warned, would result in legal action for defamation, malicious falsehood, and abuse of office.

The lawyer also urged investigators to obtain objective evidence, including location data, and appealed to journalists to verify sensitive information before publication. He stressed that the disputed land case is already before a competent court and should not be linked to the killings in Okwe.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has listed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Ibeto Cement Company Limited, BUA International Limited, and First Bank of Nigeria among prominent companies and federal government agencies that have defaulted on land charges.

The FCTA published the list of defaulters in a public notice on Monday, announcing plans to commence enforcement actions on 1,095 property titles recently revoked over the non-payment of statutory land charges.

The affected properties are located in high-brow districts including Asokoro, Maitama, Garki, and Wuse.

In a statement on Friday, the FCTA said the owners failed to settle outstanding ground rent, certificate of occupancy (C-of-O) bills, penalty/violation fees, and land use conversion fees, despite repeated notices.

Out of the 1,095 affected titles, 835 relate to default on ground rent, while 260 involve violations connected to land use conversion fees and other penalties.

A Dream Rooted in Pain and Purpose

Dr. Sani, who lost her father at the age of one and grew up as the last of eleven children, said her difficult childhood—marked by frequent evictions and homelessness—fuelled her desire to provide shelter for vulnerable women and children.

“Today, 100 women have been given more than a home; they have been given shelter, peace, and an environment where they can raise their children,” she said.

She disclosed that the project was made possible through a collaboration involving:

She expressed satisfaction with the beneficiaries’ commitment throughout the training programme that preceded the allocations.

The CEO described the Kaduna project as a pilot, adding that the model will be replicated in all 36 states.

Government, Partners Commend Project

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of Kaduna State’s Ministry of Housing Development, Shehu Salisu, said both federal and state governments remain committed to delivering housing solutions for the vulnerable.

He urged beneficiaries to maintain the facilities to encourage future interventions.

Also addressing attendees, the Managing Director of Family Homes Funds Ltd., Abdul Muktar, highlighted the organisation’s ongoing projects in Ibadan—targeting families of fallen military heroes—and Calabar, designed for the less privileged.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Sarah Owojere, described receiving a home as “a dream come true,” explaining that she previously lived in unsafe conditions and experienced recurrent flooding.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu played a central role in coordinating the successful rescue of 38 worshippers kidnapped from Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Sources confirmed that Tinubu personally oversaw intelligence briefings and operational planning, ensuring swift action by security agencies.

The Department of State Service (DSS) successfully rescued the worshippers around 3:20 pm on Sunday, following a harrowing attack by armed gunmen earlier in the week.

The assailants, armed with AK-47 rifles, invaded the church on Wednesday, killing two worshippers and injuring several others before abducting 38 more, prompting widespread outrage.

According to security sources, Tinubu’s hands-on involvement included round-the-clock briefings, intelligence mapping, and authorizing aerial surveillance by the Office of the National Security Adviser. These measures allowed DSS operatives, supported by the Nigeria Air Force, to locate and free the abducted worshippers.

The operation remains highly classified, and it is not publicly confirmed whether the gunmen were apprehended or fled upon sighting security forces. Observers noted that the area had previously experienced attacks on a marble mining company, resulting in the death of two policemen and the abduction of Chinese workers.

Tinubu’s coordination underscores the administration’s commitment to protecting citizens and maintaining security across Nigeria, especially in regions prone to banditry and violent crime.
