President Bola Tinubu has praised the men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting the nation.
Speaking at the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu emphasized the critical role that military personnel play in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“Yes, we are challenged by terrorism, banditry, and other security threats. But are we doing enough to support our armed forces? Are we encouraging them to fight? They put their lives on the line to defend the sovereignty of this country. It is our responsibility,” he said.
The President’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns over insecurity in various parts of the country, with calls for the Federal Government to address the surge in terrorist and bandit activities. Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump described attacks on Christians in Nigeria as a “mass slaughter,” urging global attention. The Nigerian government, however, stressed progress in counter-terrorism operations and reassured that significant gains have been made in the north-east.
Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating terrorism and criminality while promoting unity and resilience. “The task ahead is immense. But we are resolved to move forward with unity and purpose, to defeat terrorism and build a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient Nigeria,” he stated.
The Presidency reported an 81 percent decrease in terror-related deaths since 2015, attributing the decline to stronger inter-agency cooperation and community engagement. Over the past year, more than 13,000 terrorists were neutralized, while over 124,000 fighters and their dependents surrendered. Additionally, more than 2.1 million internally displaced persons have returned home as stability gradually returns to previously affected areas.
“Since 2023, the Federal Government has vigorously pursued, arrested, eliminated, or convicted terrorists and insurgents responsible for some of the most heinous attacks on Nigerian soil. Several high-profile cases, including the Owo Church bombing in 2022, are currently in court,” the Presidency added.
President Tinubu’s praise underscores the nation’s recognition of the armed forces’ sacrifices and the ongoing need for public support to maintain security and peace across Nigeria.
