President Bola Tinubu has appointed Opeyemi Agbaje as the new Chairman of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), following pressure from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the commission’s leadership gap. He succeeds Dr. Oyindasola Oluremi Oni.

Agbaje, a former Executive Director at GTBank and founder of RTC Advisory Services Ltd, brings decades of banking, consulting, and economic advisory experience. He holds a Law Master’s degree from UNILAG and an MBA from IESE Business School, Spain.

The NLC had warned of industrial action if PenCom’s board was not constituted, stressing that pension funds are workers’ deferred wages and must be protected from mismanagement. Agbaje’s appointment is expected to restore confidence and strengthen governance in the pension sector.

His appointment follows last year’s controversial selection of Omolola Bridget Oloworaran as Director-General, which drew scrutiny over her experience but has seen pension assets rise above ₦24 trillion by May 2025.
