Tinubu Backs Key Road Project at Owa Obokun Coronation, Commits to Road Development

President Bola Tinubu has approved the rehabilitation of the Ilesa–Ife–Ibadan dual carriageway, a critical infrastructure route connecting Osun and Oyo States, as part of broader efforts to improve regional connectivity and economic development.

The announcement was delivered by Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, during the coronation ceremony of Oba Adesuyi Clement Haastrup, Ajimoko III, the 41st Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, held in Ilesa on Friday.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Oyetola reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to grassroots development under the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that the approved intervention fund for the expressway is aimed at enhancing mobility and trade in the Southwest.

“This administration is prioritizing infrastructure, healthcare, education, and agriculture across the country,” the President said in a message read by Oyetola. “We recognize the historic and cultural significance of Ijesaland and will work closely with traditional institutions to ensure sustainable growth.”

The Ilesa–Ife–Ibadan highway, long overdue for rehabilitation, is considered a strategic corridor for regional trade and transportation, linking major towns and cities in Osun and Oyo States. The road upgrade is expected to reduce travel time and enhance local economic activities.

Governor Adeleke Lauds Monarch, Highlights Local Gains

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State also addressed guests at the ceremony, describing the newly crowned monarch as a loyal statesman and respected entrepreneur. Recalling Oba Haastrup’s previous role as deputy to his late brother, former Governor Isiaka Adeleke, he praised the new king’s character and service.

“Ijesaland is on a developmental trajectory,” the governor said. “The University of Ilesa now offers over 50 fully accredited academic programmes, and the General Hospital, Ilesa, has officially been designated as its teaching hospital.”

He further noted the nearing completion of the dualization of the Ereja Square–Brewery Junction Road, a 12-kilometre stretch aimed at modernizing Ilesa’s urban landscape and promoting economic opportunities.

The coronation attracted a high-profile crowd, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar and Namadi Sambo, and several prominent traditional rulers such as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Laoye.

Also in attendance were top Osun State officials, including lawmakers, former governors, commissioners, and traditional leaders from across the Southwest.

Expressing his gratitude, Oba Haastrup thanked the dignitaries and the people of Ijesaland for their support. “Your presence here today is a testament to our shared heritage and future,” he said.
