President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University, in a tribute to the late former president.

The announcement was made during a special Federal Executive Council session held Thursday at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, dedicated to honoring the memory of Buhari, who passed away on July 13 at the age of 82.

“Let us henceforth recognize the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University,” Tinubu declared at the session’s conclusion.

In an emotional address, Tinubu praised Buhari for his integrity, sense of duty, and moral fortitude. He described the former president as a man of great discipline and patriotism whose legacy would leave a lasting mark on Nigeria.

“President Buhari wasn’t without his imperfections no leader is but he was, above all, a decent and honourable man,” Tinubu stated. “While historians will debate his policies, his ethical standards and incorruptible nature are beyond question.”

He highlighted Buhari’s decades-long service to the country, both in military and civilian roles, commending his resistance to the temptations of power and his consistent humility.

“He stood firm, not swayed by applause or intimidated by solitude. His courage was quiet but resolute. He lived his patriotism, often expressing it more in action than in words,” Tinubu said.

The President also recalled their political journey together, particularly their alliance that led to the 2015 elections marking Nigeria’s first peaceful democratic transfer of power from one ruling party to another.

“We walked that road together, forging partnerships across political and ethnic lines to bring about a new era in Nigeria’s democracy,” Tinubu said. “Once elected, he governed with grace and carried the weight of leadership with quiet dignity.”

Reflecting on Buhari’s retirement, Tinubu lauded his decision to withdraw from the political spotlight, choosing instead to live quietly in his hometown of Daura.

“After his time in office, he didn’t seek to influence from behind the scenes. He returned to Daura in peace, living modestly and letting others take the reins,” Tinubu noted. “Even in death, he remained calm and faithful, embodying the serenity with which he lived.”

Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Inter-Ministerial Committee and Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State for organizing a state funeral within just two days of Buhari’s passing. He called it a great privilege to lead the final procession in Daura.

Ending his tribute, Tinubu offered a heartfelt prayer: “Mai Gaskiya, the People’s General, our Former President your work is done. May Almighty Allah forgive your shortcomings and welcome you into Aljannah Firdaus. May your life continue to inspire generations to serve Nigeria with honesty, resolve, and sacrifice. Thank you, President Buhari. Nigeria will not forget you.”
