President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will formally launch a series of major infrastructure projects across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of activities marking his second year in office, according to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking to journalists during a project inspection tour on Wednesday, Wike revealed that a total of 17 completed projects will be unveiled, beginning with the refurbished International Conference Centre in Abuja on June 10—immediately after the Salah holiday.
“The President has approved that project commissioning should commence next Tuesday,” Wike said. “The International Conference Centre will be the first to be inaugurated.”
Among the 17 projects, 10 will be personally commissioned by President Tinubu, Wike noted. These include significant roadworks, upgraded public buildings, and improvements in urban infrastructure. Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas will also participate in the ceremonies, each handling a share of the inaugurations on the President’s behalf, especially in satellite communities.
“This is not just about city-centre projects,” Wike explained. “The idea is to take leadership into the grassroots. For the first time, residents of satellite towns will experience federal presence directly.”
Though not all 17 projects will be formally commissioned due to time constraints, Wike said the FCT Administration will handle the remaining inaugurations internally.
The Minister expressed satisfaction with the pace of progress under the Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that the support from President Tinubu and the National Assembly has been instrumental in completing the projects on schedule.
“We made promises, and we’re fulfilling them,” Wike said. “The response from residents has been overwhelmingly positive. That alone tells us we are on the right path.”
On the future of the newly renovated International Conference Centre, Wike disclosed that a management contract will be signed with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to ensure the facility remains professionally maintained. He added that he would personally oversee the transition to a sustainable operational model.
“We are moving away from the era of neglect,” the Minister said. “This asset will be run professionally under close supervision to ensure global standards are maintained.”
As Salah approaches, Wike also took a moment to extend warm holiday wishes to residents of the FCT. He assured the public that security measures are in place for a peaceful celebration and encouraged citizens to use the holiday as a time to reflect on unity and progress.
One of the memorable moments from the Minister’s inspection tour came during a visit to Gishiri community, where excited schoolchildren welcomed him with songs and cheers—an emotional reminder of the impact of the government’s outreach in local communities.
