The Imo State Government is working to reduce street trading in Owerri, the state capital. To support this goal, it is preparing to open two upgraded markets at Ugwumabiri and Ekenuwa.

These new markets are located in the Owerri Municipal Council. They are designed to create order and improve the look of the city.

The Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Chief (Barr.) Rex Anunobi, visited the market sites this week. He also met with consultants and developers to discuss the next steps before opening the markets.

Anunobi said the relocation of traders will be fair and well-planned. He promised that no one will be moved without notice or help. The government plans to support traders with proper stalls, information, and assistance during the move.

“Our goal is to create a modern market that helps businesses grow and clears up the streets of Owerri,” he said.

The Commissioner also told developers to set up clear communication channels. These will help traders get details about:

•Stall availability

•Shop allocation

•Support programmes

The ministry will also hold meetings with traders. These sessions will allow them to ask questions and share their views on the relocation.

Anunobi confirmed that the new markets will have:

•Clean restrooms

•Safe storage areas

•Enough parking space

These features will make the markets safer, cleaner, and better for trading.

People who joined the inspection included Prince Eze Ugochukwu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment; consultants Rasky Gbinigie and Obinna Obiekwe; Project Manager Arc. Ugonna Okwara; Lead Architect Arc. Chijioke Obiekwe; and Site Architect Arc. Udemba Kenneth.

This market upgrade is part of the state’s wider plan to improve infrastructure, support small businesses, and keep Owerri clean and organized.
