A two-storey structure under construction collapsed on Sunday in the Shomolu area of Lagos, prompting swift response from emergency officials. The incident occurred during the decking phase on Craig Street.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), no casualties or injuries were recorded, as construction workers on-site were able to evacuate in time before the building gave way.
The collapse affected a second building on the same site and caused partial damage to the nearby Liberty Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) at No. 5 Craig Street, after pillars from the failed structure fell onto the church. Fortunately, worshippers escaped unhurt.
Emergency responders, including LASEMA’s Cobra Response Team, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, arrived promptly to secure the area and conduct a comprehensive search to confirm no one was trapped.
The site has since been cordoned off to prevent public access, while sensitisation efforts have been initiated to warn residents against loitering near the structure.
Authorities say an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
