The Abia State government has launched new measures to prevent building collapses. This follows two incidents in Umuahia and Aba. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
Information Commissioner Okey Kanu described the Umuahia collapse as unfortunate. “The building was approved, but a full investigation will determine the cause. Results will be public,” he said. The police have arrested the site engineer to assist with the inquiry.
Kingsley Agomuo, General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, said buildings with two floors or more will undergo mandatory integrity tests. “This ensures homes are safe and prevents future collapses,” he stated.
Agomuo emphasized proper supervision of all constructions. “The government has zero tolerance for professional misconduct. We will protect the lives of citizens,” he added.
With these measures, Abia State strengthens safety in housing and urban development. Citizens can now have confidence in the structural integrity of their homes.
