The government of Ghana has expressed strong condemnation of what it describes as a unilateral and unauthorized military intervention in Venezuela by the United States, which reportedly resulted in the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana said it was alarmed by the events that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, January 3. The ministry emphasized that such acts violate the Charter of the United Nations, international law, and the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of states.

Ghana noted that statements made by US President Donald Trump regarding the administration of Venezuela and access to its oil resources evoke a colonial and imperialist precedent, which it said has no place in the modern international order.

The Ghanaian government reaffirmed its commitment to the principle of self-determination, stating that only the Venezuelan people should determine their political and democratic future. It called for the immediate de-escalation of tensions and the release of President Maduro and his wife.

Ghana also reiterated its long-held stance against invasion, occupation, and any violations of international law, underscoring the importance of maintaining global stability and respecting national sovereignty.
