At least 75 residents have been buried following a violent attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, officials confirmed. Several others remain missing, sending shockwaves across the nation.
The Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Omar, verified on Wednesday night that 75 bodies had been laid to rest, while more residents are yet to be accounted for. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has arrived in Kaiama to assess the situation and commiserate with affected families.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed that the attack began around 6pm on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said security forces have been deployed to the area, and investigations into missing persons are ongoing.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq described the incident as a brutal attack by extremists targeting villagers for resisting a distorted religious doctrine. He noted that this massacre is unlike previous incidents involving kidnappings or property raids, labeling it a cowardly act by terrorist cells.
Addressing the Emir of Kaiama, the governor said, “We commiserate with you over the death of 75 of your subjects. These villagers abide by their Islamic faith and refused to alter their doctrine, leading to this targeted attack. It is truly condemnable.”
The Woro community massacre highlights the persistent security challenges in Nigeria, particularly from extremist groups targeting civilians for ideological reasons. Authorities continue to investigate and provide support to affected families, while security agencies intensify efforts to prevent further attacks. you want me to do that?
