President has directed all political appointees in his administration seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive applies to ministers, heads of government agencies, and presidential aides, as part of efforts to ensure compliance with electoral laws and promote transparency in the political process.
According to a circular issued by the (OSGF), the decision aligns with provisions of the and the timetable set by the (INEC) for party primaries.
SGF communicates presidential order
The circular was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, , and released through the Permanent Secretary, .
It specifies that affected officials include:
- Ministers and Ministers of State
- Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants
- Special Assistants and Personal Assistants
- Directors-General and CEOs of government agencies and parastatals
Aim is to ensure fairness in elections
The presidency said the move is necessary to prevent the misuse of public office and resources for political advantage during party primaries.
Tinubu emphasized that the directive is intended to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants and strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
Deadline for compliance
All affected appointees are required to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office on or before the March 31 deadline.
The president reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting credible elections and strengthening democratic institutions across Nigeria.
