A major traffic gridlock has left motorists stranded for hours along the Abuja-Lokoja Highway as Nigerians travel for the Easter holidays.
The busy route, which connects Abuja to parts of the North Central and southern regions, witnessed heavy congestion on Friday, with vehicles barely moving for long stretches.
Recurring Holiday Travel Nightmare
The gridlock, described as a recurring issue during festive periods, mirrors a similar situation recorded in December when some travellers reportedly spent up to four days on the road.
Motorists attributed the situation to a combination of driver impatience, poor road conditions, and ongoing construction work that has lingered for nearly two decades.
Motorists Share Frustration
Travellers caught in the traffic expressed frustration over the repeated ordeal.
One commuter, Abdu Yekeem, said he had experienced similar delays for the past two years while travelling during festive seasons. Another motorist, Abayomi Adewale, revealed he had been stuck since Thursday while travelling from Abuja to Ado Ekiti, still trapped near the River Niger Bridge as of Friday.
Calls for Urgent Government Intervention
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kogi State, Mohammed Gambo, blamed the situation on prolonged neglect of the highway. He noted that inadequate funding and poor contractor performance have stalled the project for about 20 years.
He warned that the road, a critical economic corridor for food supplies, fuel distribution, and goods transportation, could face worsening congestion as Easter travel peaks.
Economic and Social Impact
The gridlock not only disrupts travel plans but also affects logistics, trade, and economic activities, especially during peak seasons. Prolonged delays increase transportation costs, fuel consumption, and hardship for commuters.
