Residents of Eda Oniyo in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State were thrown into panic after gunmen attacked a church during an open-air crusade, killing a pastor and abducting several worshippers.

The attackers reportedly stormed the crusade ground on the outskirts of the community while the service was ongoing, opening fire and causing chaos among congregants. Witnesses said the gunmen, who were heavily armed, operated for several minutes before whisking an unspecified number of victims into a nearby forest.

A community source disclosed that the assailants arrived in large numbers and targeted the gathering without warning. The pastor was shot during the attack, while men, women, and children were taken away.

The exact number of abducted victims could not be immediately confirmed, but the incident has heightened fear among residents.

A government official, who is a member of the state security committee, confirmed the development, stating that security operatives had been deployed to the area. He added that efforts were underway to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible.

The police command in Ekiti State also confirmed the incident, noting that the attack occurred during a late-night prayer session. According to police spokesperson Sunday Abutu, the gunmen, estimated to be about five in number, killed the pastor and abducted several worshippers.

Security agencies, including the police, military, local vigilantes, and other operatives, have since launched a joint operation, combing surrounding forests in a bid to rescue the victims and track down the perpetrators.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, while advising religious groups to notify security agencies before organising large or late-night gatherings to ensure adequate protection.
