The Nigerian Army is constructing 1,000 housing units at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks Phase II in Asokoro, Abuja, as part of efforts to address accommodation challenges facing its personnel and their families.

The project, which began with a groundbreaking ceremony on December 24, 2025, is expected to accommodate about 6,000 residents and is scheduled for completion by December 2026.

Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, disclosed details of the development after inspecting the project site.

5,000 Workers Engaged In Construction

According to Dare, more than 5,000 skilled and unskilled workers have been involved in the construction.

He noted that the project site required extensive earthworks because of its hilly terrain.

The Phase II development is separate from Phase I of the barracks, which was commissioned by President Bola Tinubu on January 23, 2025, with accommodation for 614 personnel.

Army Links Housing To Troop Welfare

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has described the Phase II project as part of efforts to move away from short-term repairs towards providing durable accommodation for soldiers.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Shaibu linked improved accommodation to troop morale, family stability and operational readiness.

He also thanked President Tinubu for the funding and support for the project.

The Army said the housing programme forms part of its broader “Soldier First” welfare agenda.

Army Expands Housing Projects Nationwide

Beyond the Abuja development, Shaibu has directed the completion of ongoing residential projects across Army formations.

He also approved two 30-family blocks in each Army division as an interim accommodation measure while renovation of existing barracks continues.

The Army’s welfare programme also covers healthcare, education, insurance, family support and post-service housing.

The Phase II project is expected to provide accommodation for personnel and their families, particularly troops returning from operational deployments, as the Army continues efforts to address its long-standing housing deficit.
