Nepal’s parliament building was set ablaze on Tuesday as nationwide protests escalated, following the deaths of 19 anti-corruption activists during clashes with police earlier in the week.

The turmoil intensified after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned amid mounting anger, with officials describing the crisis as one of the most serious outbreaks of political violence in years.

Demonstrators also attacked government offices and the residences of political leaders in several regions. Authorities confirmed at least three more fatalities on Tuesday.

Amid the unrest, prison officials reported that nearly 900 inmates escaped from two facilities in western Nepal, adding to the sense of chaos.

The protests were initially triggered by a government decision to ban social media platforms, a move widely condemned as an attempt to silence dissent. Although the ban was lifted on Monday, the demonstrations had already swelled into a nationwide movement against corruption and repression.
