Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on architects and other construction professionals to uphold global best practices as a means of curbing the rising incidents of building collapse across the state.
Sanwo-Olu made the appeal during the 6th Distinguished Lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), held recently in Lagos. Represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, the governor emphasized the critical role architects play in ensuring safety and order in the built environment.
He noted that professionals must speak up and work together to establish policies that promote safety and sustainability in urban planning. “Professionals don’t talk enough in our country. If you advocate for height restrictions or stricter regulations, it’s quickly politicized. But when buildings collapse, the tragedy affects everyone equally,” he said, citing examples from Paris, where strict zoning regulations have helped preserve the cityscape.
The lecture featured a keynote presentation by Olubukuola Ejiwunmi, a past president and the first female leader of the NIA. She stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the Nigerian Institute of Architects and the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) to elevate local capacity and oversee major national projects.
“For decades, we have advocated for Nigerian professionals to lead major developments. Where foreign expertise is needed, they must be registered with our bodies. Architecture must reflect collaboration, national pride, and shared values,” she said.
Ejiwunmi also urged the government to support innovation and diversity in architecture through targeted policy reforms that strengthen institutional frameworks.
In her opening remarks, current NIA President Mobolaji Adeniyi said the lecture series was designed to inspire architects to think boldly and build responsibly. She praised Ejiwunmi for her trailblazing leadership and commitment to excellence.
The event underscored growing concerns about structural integrity in Nigeria’s construction sector and called for increased professionalism, regulatory enforcement, and strategic urban development to prevent future tragedies.
