Multiple people sustained injuries in the early hours of Thursday following the collapse of a residential building along Adeniji Adele Road in the Isale Eko area of Lagos Island.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Nigerian Police Force, and other rescue agencies swiftly mobilised to the scene, where trapped occupants were successfully rescued and transported to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.

According to an update from LASTMA’s official X handle, the collapse occurred overnight and has prompted an ongoing search and rescue operation. The affected building site has been cordoned off to ensure public safety, while emergency officials continue combing through the rubble for possible additional victims.

“There is a report of an overnight collapsed building along Adeniji Adele road, at Isale Eko. LASTMA personnel, other emergency responders, and men of the Nigerian Police Force are on the ground. Victims rescued from the building have been taken to the hospital for treatment,” the agency stated.

To facilitate movement around the affected area, traffic has been temporarily diverted. LASTMA advised motorists to reroute via Oba’s Palace and Enu Owa Street to avoid congestion along the blocked section of Zenith Street.

Although the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be officially determined, experts have long cited structural defects and the ageing state of buildings in parts of Lagos Island as contributing factors to such incidents. Authorities have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
