The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has opened applications for the 2026 National Research Fund (NRF) Grant Cycle, with the Federal Government allocating ₦10 billion to support research addressing Nigeria’s national development priorities.
Lecturers at Nigerian public tertiary institutions are eligible to apply for the research funding, with concept notes required to be submitted by October 15, 2026.
The National Research Fund is administered by TETFund to support high-quality research across the humanities, social sciences, science, engineering, technology, innovation and interdisciplinary fields.
₦10bn Available for 2026 Research Funding
The ₦10 billion represents the total allocation for the 2026 grant cycle and is not the amount available to individual research projects.
According to the grant guidelines, project awards will be subject to competitive evaluation, approval of full research proposals, available programme resources, approval by the TETFund Board of Trustees and compliance with grant-management requirements.
The 2026 allocation is an increase from the more than ₦6.09 billion allocated to 174 research projects under the 2025 NRF cycle.
Research Areas Covered
The 2026 NRF Grant Cycle has 30 priority thematic areas grouped into three broad categories: Humanities and Social Sciences; Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation; and Cross-Cutting Research.
The Humanities and Social Sciences category includes citizenship and national integration, conflict and security, economic development, education and human capital, governance and politics, gender and social inclusion, history and culture, media, migration, social development, tourism and sports.
The Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation category covers agriculture and food security, geosciences, health, industry and innovation, information technology, power and energy, science and engineering, space technology, natural resources, transport and infrastructure, and water and sanitation.
Cross-cutting areas include the blue economy, clean and affordable energy, entrepreneurship and wealth creation, environment, housing and urban development, resource governance, and innovation and technology in national defence.
Applicants are expected to align their proposed research with an appropriate priority thematic area.
Who Can Apply?
Eligibility is restricted to lecturers employed by Nigerian public tertiary institutions.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The Principal Investigator must be a lecturer.
- The Principal Investigator must be based at a Nigerian public tertiary institution.
- The applicant’s institution must serve as the Coordinating Institution.
- The institution must guarantee the proper use of awarded funds.
- The proposed research must align with an eligible thematic area.
- The application must be submitted through the official online platform.
TETFund also encourages multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research teams capable of addressing complex national challenges from different perspectives.
How the TETFund Research Grant Process Works
The 2026 application process begins with the submission of concept notes.
TETFund will evaluate the concept notes and invite applicants whose proposals are considered fundable to submit full research proposals.
The full proposals will then undergo competitive review before recommended projects are considered by the TETFund Board of Trustees.
Approved funds will subsequently be disbursed through the appropriate institutional arrangements.
Submitting a concept note does not guarantee an invitation to the full-proposal stage or eventual funding.
