Amidst a heavy downpour on Thursday, a three-storey building located at Ita Faaji Market in the Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State collapsed, sparking panic in the community.

According to information gathered by our source, the incident occurred around 9 am, sending shockwaves through the area.

Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, revealed in a statement that the building was undergoing renovation before it gave way. Fortunately, she added, the construction workers managed to escape unharmed.

“The collapsed building, located at 24, Binuyo Street off Ita Faaji Market, Lagos, was under renovation at the time of the incident. The few artisans on site escaped unhurt,” the statement read.

Emergency responders from Ebute Elefun Fire Station and other state agencies swiftly arrived at the scene to provide assistance. Adeseye noted that while the cause of the collapse remained unknown, recovery operations had been successfully completed.

This unfortunate incident is reminiscent of a similar tragedy in September 2023 when an 80-year-old woman lost her life as the staircase of a storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State. The Lagos State Building Control Agency expressed condolences to the victims and attributed the collapse to non-compliance with vacation notices issued to occupants of the building.

Once again, emergency responders have mobilized for a rescue mission, demonstrating their commitment to swift action during times of crisis.
